Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters 1985
It is fascinating to watch a Japanese story headed by some of the most iconic American filmmakers of all time. I thought this might diminish the story’s authenticity, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it did the opposite. The unconvential narrative structure that was at first slightly jarring, was wholly engaging by the end. It was backed up with strong performances, intriguing production design for the recreation of Mishima’s novels and a pretty seamless feeling edit. The film’s score was particularly enjoyable, helping to set the pace for what might have been an otherwise slowish opening act.
