  Wow wow wow I love this so much. It's so gorgeous and I love how theatrical it feels, plus it's just really well done storytelling. And it has everything! Drama! Comedy! Love! Heartbreak! Life! Death! Costumes! Stunning special effects! There's just something about Japanese folk stories that I can't get enough of despite lacking a lot of cultural context.

  Lots to love in here - interesting story, a claustrophobic yet oppulant atmosphere, Stanley Tucci is a treat to watch, etc. But the VISUALS. Holy shit. This was made to be seen on a big screen. The composition of each shot, the dynamic lighting and striking colours, the detailed costumes - every frame felt like a renaissance painting. I don't think it would have the same impact on me if I hadn't seen it in a theater.
