Very interesting movie about a psychoanalytic therapy conducted by the famous French therapist, Jacques Lacan. As far as I know it's based on an actual therapy, but anyway it gives a great insight into how a speech centered therapy looks like and what the underlying mechanisms are. Also, there is a lot of Lacan's theories inserted into the film about identity, sex/gender and language. Adieu Lacan almost solely relies on dialogue, but there is a visual language to it as…
It's a wonderfully shot and directed gothic/psychological horror, that doesn't overly explain the plot or what exactly is taking place and which character is detached from reality.
This was an okay movie about the implications of today's approach towards love and relationships. The emancipatory aspect is quite weak I think, as the supposed personality emerging from the titular companion lovebot is not really convincing as a true human character. Not that the rest of the crew would deliver more lifelike performances, the film is a little stiff in that area. But nevertheless there are some interesting topics brought up in the script, especially around the way we treat each other in a relationship as mainly objects of desire. And I thought Jack Quaid was likeably douchey.
