This is an interesting movie to rate because it's not a masterclass, and yet I still don't think I can give it anything other than 5 stars. It's a perfect movie but not perfect as in Christopher Nolan perfect, just a movie without flaws. Plot? Engaging. Characters? Real. Jokes? Funny. Everyone involved is flawed in their own way and that makes this movie feel realistic. Also, the writers clearly had fun with the ending which was commendable. It was refreshing…
This was an extremely unique movie. I really enjoyed the premise and I thought the execution was good outside of the set up being a little too long for a movie of this length. I would’ve preferred more focus on the ending but that’s also part of the quirkiness of the movie. I will admit that the ending was unexpected which made the movie so much better. Without spoiling, if they had gone down the route you initially expect as a viewer, I would’ve given a 3 but the switch up was extremely engaging.
Long Shot is a fantastic romcom. While yes, the narrative arc itself was quite predictable and some could even say cliché, that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Long Shot did both the rom and the com so well, that the predictability makes the movie as a whole endearing and comfortable, which I would argue is the whole point.
