There’s a lot here that deserves more in-depth coverage. One area that sticks out like a sore thumb is the late 90s to early 2000s; even though it’s arguably her professional peak, it was a tumultuous era for Janet’s personal life and it feels barely mentioned here. ★★★★½

I really appreciate the focus on physicality here. There’s acknowledgement from Sakamoto that he is pushing himself, inclusion of tuning and mistakes, hypersensitive mics picking up every sound in the room, and of course, the beautiful shots of the mechanical workings of his piano and the setup recording it. It’s effective shorthand for the blood, sweat, and tears put in to make his career as legendary as it is, and a reminder that behind all this gorgeous, moving music, there was a human experiencing those emotions and painstakingly transforming them into art.
