Since there isn’t much in the way of a “story” amid the 2 hours and 40 minutes of this film, I was tempted to give it less than 4 stars. I also couldn’t shake the feeling that if some of the dialogue were dubbed in English, it would come off a little contrived and heavy-handed.
But at the same time, it’s a masterful verité (funny term for such a stylized film) assessment of modern life. When it’s not lamenting the…
Cooked up in a Silverlake coffee shop, rife with Zillennial-speak, and predictable. It would be wrong to call this a bad movie, because it’s clear that the filmmaker was in control the whole time; it’s a competently made film, and very much a product of contemporary culture. There’s clearly a broad audience for this kind of fare.

A perfect film in my opinion. Its surgical-like precision manages to not detract from the pathos of the film, such that you get a masterclass in visual craft, and are left with the deepest, aching emotions. It’s just so balanced, no irony intended.
Also the use of Chopin’s E Minor Prelude, whose melody slowly descends (falls- get it?), as a diagetic/non-diagetic piece is brilliant. How Daniel wrestles through the responsibility placed on him is so delicately expressed in his playing…
If judged on the merits of film-making alone, Complete Unknown isn’t much to write home about. But if you want to see pretty flawless recreations of Dylan’s most iconic performances, this really scratches that itch. It almost feels like an AI-prompted film, in that we don’t learn much about any one character, but we do get to see the Newport Folk Festival crowd jeering at Dylan during his infamous electric set.
What saves the film is not only Chalamet’s affecting Dylan portrayal, but the fact that Dylan’s songs are so damn good, that watching their conception on screen is enough to justify the film’s being made.
