A film about what love is and isn't. Stunning visual and sonic choices, excellent editing, storytelling that's sometimes elliptic and often meticulous. Binoche and Lavant are perfect. French folly made cinema ! I wouldn't be surprised to discover that Xavier Dolan cites this as an influence, there's much of the same passionate and exuberant filmmaking in Laurence Anyways.

Is this the straightest Lynch story ? In any case it is a candidly filmed one about age and family and the repercussions of the former on the latter. Touching on themes of mortality, wisdom and pride, tradition vs modernity, WW2 trauma and the passing of time, this may be one of the most American films I have seen, complete with cowboy hats, John Deere engines, deer antlers and an iron bridge over Mississippi River. The fact that I appreciated this as much although it's so 'Murican and so far in tone from his other films is proof of Lynch's talent as a filmmaker.

Joker just got dethroned as "most unjustly overhyped film of the 21st century". This is maybe one of the worst films I've ever seen, and cultural populism at its finest : Audiard took what has a lot of appeal both in mainstream culture (musical comedy, Latinx-American pop) and progressive discourse (gender politics, Mexico's disappeared) and made an exoticising, fetishising film out of it with seemingly no interest in either of these fields' realities.

It may be just a really botched…

A constant state of unease and tension, smart visual effects, subtly good directing and Nathan Micay's tense soundtrack make for a very enjoyable film !
