for me, past lives explores how we connect with the past, passage of time and fate. we can attach ourselves to moments in life and let desires lead your life into exhaustion but essentially, the course of life is way too abstract to choose or manipulate fate. even when you accept fate and live by it, there is no immunity to the wounds of time but there can be clarity.
