  Feels like a subversion of the screen movie before the screen movie staples were even established. Rather than being rigidly diegetic with webcams or whatever else, the OS stuff acts more as an expressionistic supplement to “traditional movie” footage, which is otherwise a still hilarious and biting romp through a checklist of archetypes, and in synthesis showcases how being online has poisoned how we process social scenarios.

  "I just lost the Game."

  Really loved the visuals of this. Definitely a 2011 film, but I mean that in a good way. There's a charm to it. Some of the humor hasn't aged exactly the best, but that's not something I'll really knock it for. 21 year old me definitely enjoyed some stupid edgy humor back in 2011.

  The unique presentation captures the online culture of the mid to early 2000's to a tee. It's a throwback for sure and I got a real nostalgic kick out of it. The story is super basic but it's got the right amount of humor and awkwardness that allows it to be entertaining all the way through.

  4.5 Simply on the merit of the visuals alone. This is the way I want movies like Unfriended to be. Fuck accuracy, just go full alternate reality computer that blends all time periods from 2000 to 2006. Computer basically becomes the reality here, meshing with the real world. Overlooking the kind of annoying plot and characters, simply because this approach is the fucking best.

  Takes the ScreenLife concept to the most extreme level by using computer and internet aesthetics as a direct extensions and expressions of the characters' minds ... except this came out before ScreenLife was even coined. It's like if we got DePalma before Hitchcock or blu ray before VHS. Funny as hell, logistically mind-blowing, simultaneously the most modern and dated movie I have ever seen.

  screenlife taken to the extreme. a visual representation of data overload. eugene talked about this film as creating a new cinematic language in a sarcastic way but i do think that it really does capture the current age in a way i’ve never seen done before. a film like unfriended or it’s sequel works because of the verisimilitude that comes from creating a desktop film. this film captures the same energy as the fully desktop film but translates it into the way the majority of people currently live their lives. it creates a new way of viewing reality through the screen. constant text messages and images invading scenes which are supposed to be private. this is the kind of film where i really feel like i will notice a new thing every single time i watch it. unbelievable work.

  I was ready to love this, but as you can tell, that didn't happen 😂

  This extremely playful take on the screenlife genre is an overload of pop-up visual information meant to mimic everything from IM chat and MySpace to audio visualizers and first person shooters. It's a bold experiment and I love the idea behind it. I just wish the barebones plot and characters it all hangs off of wasn't such a drag. It does seem to be a cult hit with the terminally online, though.

  0s and 1s is a well-edited, funny, and chaotic adventure of one man in search of his laptop.

  I’ve seen enough of Eugene’s work to consider his films severely underrated. I want to give this a 5-star just for the editing and visuals alone. It’s unique and bold, and it’s not afraid to push the limits. I was lost in this world and my little ADHD brain was hypnotized throughout. Watching this film in an age where no one can live without technology gives a new perspective. You can derive a lot of meaning from the themes throughout. The only things I thought could use improvement were the writing and performances. There was a lot of potential to make certain scenes hilarious, but it was still a fun film! A Wonderful Cloud is my favorite film from Eugene.

  Extremely my shit… surprised I haven’t seen anything from Kotlyarenko at this point (I saw him in a fishing vest at the American Pavilion at Cannes this past summer but didn’t want to be weird and try to talk to him when I wasn’t that familiar with his work and mostly knew of him from hearing Honor Levy talk about him on Wet Brain) but I think this is doing a wonderful synthesis of a few distinct aesthetic strains and I’m hoping to fold this into a paper I’m planning on post-internet aesthetics in film.
