A truly middling film that delivers exactly as advertised. The sort of low-stakes mid-tier saccharine drama that's just another serviceable programmer for the box office — which in the context of Singapore's film industry, is what I'd consider a success. It's a step in the right direction, even if it's just a tiny shuffle. Ajoomma is probably undeserving of the international accolades it's getting — which feels more like a participation trophy or a sort of backhanded slap on the back, but more so, a critical reflection on the dire slim pickings of generally decent work that comes out of the country — but it should still be upheld and celebrated as a piece of work that's successful in its…

singaporean auntie in her lost in translation era
I’m always happy to support Singaporean cinema and this one, while predictable and hackneyed at times, at least has some charm and a strong central performance by Hong. It struggles to settle on a tone, and the lengthy comic chase sequence in the middle devolves into silliness. It also resolves certain key plot points in a manner that is none too convincing. The audience ate it up though, and it breezes by pleasantly enough.
was just trying to use up my movie voucher before it expires tomorrow and randomly watched this because the time was convenient but this turned out to be so heartwarming and lovely to watch!! the scenery and colours are also so pretty to me and KANG HYUNG SUK????
HELLOOOOO HE IS SO HOT AND CHARMING WHEN I TELL U I HELD MY BREATH EVERY MOMENT HE IS ON SCREEN.... and it's so insane because I've seen almost every kdrama he's in but he never really stood out since he was usually in minor roles bUTTTT HE IS SO... ATTRACTIVE
also my multi-lingual ass understood all the Hokkien, Chinese, English and Korean dialogue exchanged and I'm just saying..,. some of the…
i too would fall in love with little woodcarver and be obsessed with yeo jin goo
Just such a wholesome, charming gem, and Hong Huifang is absolutely central to what I hope will be a mainstream success. Billed only as Auntie, she fittingly and effortlessly embodies the quintessential aging Singaporean housewife. Every aspect of her performance feels carefully calculated, with frequently hilarious moments of written and physical comedy complemented by genuine heartstring-tugging scenes of melancholy and brokenness.
On that note, what Ajoomma evolves into is a story of insufficiency, of learning how to reconcile with being incomplete, with having a broken family, with foolishly spent money and wasted years. He Shuming and Kris Ong draw striking parallels between the simplicity of the Korean lifestyle compared to the functional emotionlessness of our own; the resulting interplay between…
i will be a changed woman after i come back from korea
auntie lim reminds me filipino aunties who likes to zumba every morning, watches kdrama to learn how to say saekki ya or saranghae oppa, buys dunkin donut coz kim soo hyun endorses it and is proud that her son/daughter is now working in america 😬
honestly, it felt like a korean tour agency/kdrama ad to me with the oversentimentality, color grading, and melodramatic music but it's tough to ignore those compassionate scenes coz of the actors' performances, especially auntie lim, ahjussi and the korean tour guide.
overall, i think it's a decent watch for me coz auntie lim seems like a cool person to hang out with and she and ahjussi are so cute together huehue. kang hyung suk should be in a lot of projects though.
The cinematography conveys a gentleness that's really welcoming. The visuals and Hong Huifang's strong performance aside, I thought this was rather middling. Its plot is so generic and feels like it was written to check off certain boxes. Still, Ajoomma has its charms and is pretty pleasant. I really like how it looks and feels, it radiates such a sweet warmth. The cinematography is definitely the high point of this film.
So upsetting that there is zero kissing in this
