The painful life of a mentally unstable but highly gifted woman is unveiled in this film, based on episodes from the life of an actual person. Aloise (Delphine Seyrig) creates a series of haunting drawings while she is incarcerated in an institution for the insane in turn-of-the-century Switzerland. She endures torments as a musically gifted girl and later as a young woman; her developing madness and the barbaric treatments of the time are shown.

My longstanding interest in Outsider Art and the art of the disabled leads me to this, Delphine Seyrig's third big collaboration with a female director in 1975. The others are, of course, 'Jeanne Dielman...' and 'India Song', and certainly this is the lesser of the three texts. To de Kermadec's credit, she attempts to move what could have been a sensationalist story of a 'mad' artist into a more nuanced depiction of Aloïse as a woman. To this end, she tells a simple, linear story from the death of Aloïse's mother to her own death, only briefly mentioning her artistic endeavours. Curiously, she omits the figure of Aloïse's older sister, a controlling figure who denied her…

Aloïse tells the life story of the Swiss schizophrenic outsider artist Aloïse Corbaz, part of the Art Brut movement of the early 20th century. She's portrayed here by two of France's finest actresses - Isabelle Huppert in her youth and Delphine Seyrig in her mature and older years. The concept for the film is fascinating and with such strong cast credentials I was hoping this was going to be much more interesting than it was - unfortunately by the time I actually felt like it was beginning to explore interesting territory, it was 20 minutes from the end.
The de-emphasis on her art feels like it really hinders the story, and means this ends up falling headlong…
My French isn't good enough to have fully appreciated this but it's beautiful on a purely aesthetic level. In urgent need of restoration.
one of the better portraits of institutionalization as a means of social control, in this case the German empire, the church and patriarchal medical standards converging to defer a woman’s artistic aspirations until neutralization and containment of her as a mental medical issue they can interpret from a safe remove, housed with others displaced by national and world historical rupture. Was reminded, despite the eventual recognition she received, of that Stephen Jay gould quote "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops".
Trop bien de voir ce film juste après Sois belle et tais toi. Je pense à la voix de Delphine Seyrig qui demande à toutes ces actrices, as-tu déjà joué une scène chaleureuse avec une autre femme ? et à toutes ces réponses déçues… Et là, ces femmes qui prennent soin les unes des autres, ces séquences de toilette… c’est si beau, si doux dans toute cette violence.
