Anikulapo, Anikulapo Rise of the Spectre, 아니쿨라포, 阿尼库拉波:不死传说, 阿尼庫拉波:不死傳說, אניקולאפו, Анікулапо, Aníkúlápó, aki legyőzte a halált
I decided to watch Anikulapo by Kunle Afolayon because of the controversy over the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) not submitting the movie to the Oscars for International Feature Film Category.
This is a good movie. Kunle Folayon was very ambitious. The set was excellent, the effect was great. The dialogue and acting were ok. It was the typical melodrama that I see in a lot of Nollywood films. NOSC lost the opportunity to promote African movies. It should have been submitted. Should it have been selected by the Oscars? That is a different story. For me, probably not. There were a lot of great foreign films last year. Who will forget "All is quiet in the Western Front".
Anikulapo in the Yoruba language means death in my pocket. What will you do if you have the power to raise the dead? Mysticism, love, greed all comes out.
The cinematography in the Nigerian film industry has really improved significantly. The visuals in this film were really crisp & vibrant. Some of the scenes set in the dark could have been a little brighter but all in all, the film is visually stunning.
The first half of the film I felt was really good. The pacing felt alright & although the plot lines/themes were simple, they all played into each other really well. The performances from Kunle Remi as Saro and Sola Sobowale as Awarun were great in the first half also.
The second half of this film drops in quality quite substantially. The film starts to drag a little. The twists in the films plot also felt quite lacklustre and…
moral of the story.... men are scum
I was trying to use my phone while watching this film, but you should’ve seen me reading subtitles for my life like I was watching anime.😭 Yoruba boy that I claim to be.
He is horny and he has the power to raise the dead. There's some sort of poetic accuracy to that.
Anikulapo sees Kunle Afolayan, once again, tell a story of morals and consequences with the artistic style and vibrant cinematography the prolific filmmaker has come to be known for.
It's a culture-rich universe that's beautiful to look at, one that features a lot of popular faces playing characters of varying degree of importance.
While the movie can neither be said to be iconic or mind-blowing, it'll surely be remembered as one of Afolayan's most simplistic stories to ever grace the big screen, and that, I believe, is something.

A Nigerian fairy tale that is worth a watch despite its immense length.
arolake diva deserved much better
nah this was so good !! had every element a movie needs truly chef’s kiss
If they cut it down to an hour and 30 mins I think it could make for a better movie. The pacing is terrible and there's so many useless scenes which aren't interesting or bring any additional insight to the characters. It also doesn't count any intelligence in the viewer, why flashback to a pivotal scene that i shall ofcourse remember.
Loved what it's about. Men ain't shit and I we must remember that all day long. I hoped to see some repercussions for his gift, that one scene where the woman is mad at him for bringing her back to life was hilarious. In the end the melodrama is more of what this movie is interested in which really shocked me. I don't know why I thought recent nollywood was different lol this is very similar to what played on the Naija movie channels all day long on DSTV but with better cameras and lighting.
All I'm going to say is:
1. He had it coming
2. She deserves better
3. The other women should have left him
