Hovering between the realms of poetry and history, this stunningly photographed, elegiac work – shot mostly in long takes – mixes cryptic metaphor and fantastic symbolism to tell the story of Avetik, an Armenian filmmaker exiled in Berlin. In sensuous, lyric styling, Askarian employs dreamlike images to reflect the history of his homeland, tranquil childhood memories, images inspired by erotic medieval poetry, and autobiographical shades of his own exile in Germany.

I seriously don’t know where to place ‘Avestik.’ I’m stuck in a dilemma because I’ve seen films like this before and usually have nothing but praise for them, but I can’t lie, I was bored shitless. The lack of dialogue and any real pull made it a tough watch. I can appreciate the artistry, and visually, there were some stunning shots of the Armenian landscape, but beyond that, I struggled to engage with it. It felt like a film that expected me to just sit back and absorb without questioning, but I couldn’t help feeling like I was missing something crucial the entire time.
Visually, there’s an Armenian…
A fragmentation of the self, like Tarkovsky's ever-reflective eye, simultaneously observing and consuming and wandering. Stone architecture is decrepit and in decay yet the natural state of Home grows. Man claims so much but rarely focuses on the few - a violin bursts to reveal globs of succulent honey from an active hive. A cavalcade of images recall multiple paradoxes particularly that of time, the waltz of past and future manifest unshaken bodies in repose, on a river, in a fog, lost in a thicket. Much of this probably sounds like nothing because it is without the picture, but so little out there visually impresses the senses and feels so familiar (like the Russian auteur without being by the Russian auteur). Life is poetry.
Astonishing. This is like if someone put the works of Terayama, Tarkovsky, Jodorowsky, Parajanov and Dali into a blender and the result was this fascinating surrealist overkill. So while the visual style isn't as original as it seems at first, this is so well executed and Don Askarian's imagery is so strong that the film nevertheless comes across as fresh, personal and a joy to watch.
In tableaux form, Askarian engages with languid memories of childhood and youth, as well as with the troubled history and future of the Armenian people and culture. Visions of ancient ruins, dead matter and abandoned objects and places getting revitalized by various images of fertility and growth seem to be the main leitmotif here. Attractive, funny, dark, cryptic, wistful and heartfelt, Avetik is one of the best films of the '90s.
Askarian develops an intensely private language to obliquely come to grips with the public realm of his people, where they're from, where they're headed. In other words, beyond the typical visual signifiers of "poetry" (and there are plenty), this is poetic in the sense that it borrows an actual working method from poets (I was thinking of Symbolists, Surrealists, Eugenio Montale). The repeating motif of natural life growing out of civilization's discards--the cracked, abandoned cello with a beehive inside. Bees make honey, honey drips on a woman's breasts--the cycles of decay and regeneration? The rich symbolism hints at meaning, but more than anything, betrays a profound rigor of private significance, so that it's dreamlike but far from undisciplined.

A train shakes Avetik's Berlin apartment when it passes, shuttering the light that comes through the windows. Inside, there are projections: a slide projector showing archival texts, a film projector showing ruins, the Berlin news. A woman interviews Avetik about Armenia. Later, she will be the screen for the projections, will be wrapped in roots. Later, Avetik will lie down in the street outside his apartment as cars pass by.

WOW! This must be what “Tarkovsky’s Mirror” and “The color of pomegranates” to their fanboys. Transcending poetry, A world that isn’t ours, that doesn’t exist, but is ONLY existent inside this film. Visuals so powerful that they demand an emotional response from you. Even if you don’t know what that response it. Does this scene make me happy? Sad? Well, none of that, But I do know it felt like being hit, a pure neural impulse that stayed pure and didn’t turn into any feeling.
You can divide this film into 2 “timelines”, the majority of it takes place DIALOGUE FREE in Armenia. Impressionistic flashbacks to childhood and ancestors. It has this Parajanov feeling of being abstract/VERY region specific in…

Maybe superficial comparison but formally reminded me of a more austere Parajanov. Very much interested in films that appear to be an attempt at giving memory (cultural, personal) a form

كان النبيّ الأرمينيّ يبالغ في النصيحة لتلميذه "دون أسكريان" فهذا الأخير أجرى محاورة ودّية مع "باراجانوف" في بيت الأخير، قام بأفلمتها فيما بعد بعنوان Paradjanov" (1998)". رافق "أسكريان" معلّمه إلىٰ مهرجان نوتردام السينمائي عام 1989م حيث قال "سيرجي" « كلنا نولد لأب وأم، إلا الفيلم لو ولد لأبوين لأصبح الفيلم لقيطًا! »
بعيدًا عن علاقته بباراجانوف، فأن "أسكاريان" مخرج سينمائي ذكي، صنع فيلمين طويلين:
komitas (1989) و Avetik (1992)
فقط إلىٰ جانب مجموعة أفلام قصيرة آخرىٰ. نال من خلالهما سمعة دوليّة. "أسكريان" لا يصل إلىٰ صلب الموضوع أبدًا. بدلاً من ذلك، علىٰ طريقة المخرج الأمريكيّ "صموئيل فولر"، يأتي إليها من الأبواب الخلفيّة.
