Set in the 1990s during Japan's "band boom" era, the film tells the tale of a girl in high school, Asako, who goes to a concert and meets Natsu, vocalist of the new band LANDS. Asako ends up being the band manager, but as the band's popularity starts to soar, the band's friendship begins to suffer.

Intended as a peek behind the music biz, BANDAGE never quite succeeded as such as it didn’t fully commit to its characters. I never got the sense that the relationship between the band leader and the girl did hurt the band at all which is why I felt surprised when the movie went there. I also didn’t care for any person really as there’s so much self-pity on display here and I most certainly do not enjoy spending time with a band who thinks they are the shit.

Watched it for the first time about 10 years ago or something like that and always remembered it as a pretty great band movie. Then I came here to check and see all the mixed reviews. I check Japanese website and see more mixed reviews. And I'm a bit surprised, because it's still pretty great.
Some people complain about the acting, but I think it fits the characters, other people complain, that the protagonist is too innocent/naive, but she's a high school girl.

A pretty standard, but decent and slightly above par Japanese band drama. There are quite a few of these though, and they never really seem to stand out much. Bandage was written by Iwai, which at least gives it some extra backing, but the result is still pretty much what you'd expect from a film like this.
The camera work and cinematography were nice though. A bit freer and less restrained than usually the case, which helps to give the drama a bit of an extra push. The characters feel also a little more realistic and grounded, but it's not really enough to elevate this film above its many peers.

Being an Iwai Shunji-produced and co-written film, I was quick to pick up BANDAGE, hoping for something original and enjoyable. I’m not sure how involved Iwai was with the film (I’m guessing not too much, though there are undoubtedly Iwai inspirations scattered throughout the film), but it mostly delivered on my hopes.
Casting Akanishi Jin as one of the leads was a smart move by director Kobayashi Takeshi. He brings massive fan support to the movie, not to mention experience in the Japanese music industry. It has been more than a decade since I first watched Bandage, back when DVDs were still a thing and when having a portable DVD player boosted your coolness factor. Bandage is ultimately a film about self-discovery. It is effective in portraying the life of an indie band in 1990′s Japan, when the rise and fall of these bands was commonplace due to TV talent shows. With a strong cast, great music, and effective camera-work this manages to rise above my expectations.
