I probably missed the nuances in many of the specific political details. But I did understand enough of what was going on to conclude that this movie is quite a doosey. I do feel like there could have been a touch more artistry in some spots, but story-wise? This movie’s got the goods.
This is a trilingual film, using Welsh, Irish and English languages to tell the story of Branwen, a Welsh girl who becomes caught up in the Irish troubles. Story is a modernisation based on Branwen from the Mabinogion, an ancient collection of Welsh folk tales.
Extremely good film, relocating parts of the Mabinogion (Welsh mythology) to contemporary Wales and Northern Ireland. Of course, it strips mines all the supernatural elements but it keeps the story intact and manages to insert a message of peace and tolerance without hitting you over the head. The ending is horrible, though expected if you know your Welsh mythology.
