I'm always up for a good crime or gangster picture, so when I discovered this one on Netflix, I decided to add it to my queue. And going into this film knowing nothing about it was great because I was able to learn more and even be surprised when I learned about the crimes and events that transpired in the life of this renowned criminal.
The film itself does not play as a typical flashy movie like Scarface, but rather as a standard biographical drama with fairly calm components common of movies in the genre in the 1940s and 1950s. One of those big, idiosyncratic prestige swings where you look at it and go there's a movie in here that absolutely nobody involved was able to find. Instead Scorsese found it when he made THE AVIATOR. Hand to God, it's the same exact thing. Very cool Warren Beatty puppet in that one scene towards the end.
Barry Levenson is no Scorsese which gets increasingly hard to ignore after a while once you realize Beatty's romantic GANGSTER OR MOVIE STAR vision of Bugsy is an exact cross between Sam "Ace" Rothstein and Howard Hughes. However, it looks as expensive as its prestige passion project origins would suggest, features an extended scene of Warren Beatty having a serious mob movie meeting wearing a cartoonishly large chef hat, and you basically get to watch him fall in love with Annette Bening in real-time. Also, James Toback is a monster but I'd by lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of the hilariously sexualized dialogue between the gangsters; so much unnecessary, angry shit-talking about them fucking and sucking each other.
Unloved gangster film Bugsy doesn't always work, but hits most of it's marks when it counts. When you think of a tough guy in the movies, Warren Beatty probably isn't the first person who pops in your head. I think a lot of people think he might have been miscast in this film, but I think Beatty is quite good. He usually is. When he needs to be Beatty can be quite menacing. He's no Harvey Keitel, Joe Mantenga, or Ben Kingsley — but he doesn't need to be, they fill out the supporting roles quite well. Obviously he and Annette Bening have pretty great chemistry, they first met and fell in love making the film.

It's a real shame that Bugsy is largely remembered now as being the film that introduced and finally tamed the famed womaniser Warren Beatty to his leading lady and wife of twenty-two years now, Annette Bening. It's a shame because the sleek, glossy and seductive Bugsy is a great film that should stand on its own merit rather than the off screen legend.

There's a well-known story in my family about Ruth Weinstein, a lovely lady who worked as one of my mother's assistants in the Brooklyn College Music Library for decades. Warren Beatty really is like no other. Inmensely charismatic, charming, funny, yet he also sells the menace and danger of the character. Even when he's borderline over the top, he's someone in complete control. He remains so mangnetic, you just want to follow him wherever he goes. The whole Mussolini bit is so funny but also completely works because of how he's selling it.
Beatty and Annette Benning have great chemistry together, she's fantastic also, and I love a romance doomed from the start that involves shady business practices.
It's not a risky movie or a deep, complex one. But I thought it was a great romance movie, more than anything, and it sucked me right in.
Despite having an absolutely magnetic Warren Beatty performance at its core, Bugsy is also too scattershot and meandering to be a truly great mob film on the level of the classics. It still is pretty solid though, with most of why it works being as a result of Beatty in the title role since his performance is so ferocious and charming that you buy him as Bugsy Siegel even as the movie around him isn't as strong. Other aspects, such as the supporting cast and the technical filmmaking are also very good, but it's with its storytelling and narrative that Bugsy falters somewhat. One of the stand-out qualities of Bugsy is Ennio Morricone’s music score. Passages are seductive and also elegiac. It is making a statement that the film takes place during a special time and a bygone era, the glamorous and sex-fueled 1940’s where hoods and movie stars occasionally hobnobbed or bedded together.
Warren Beatty’s last two damn good performances were “Bulworth” (1998) and as gangster Bugsy Siegel in this 1991 biopic, two where he was brazen and a cock of the walk. Bugsy is temperamental and can go headlong into vicious beatings of those around that cheat him. Other times, he sees himself not as a gangster but as a vogue businessman.
