  Slightly disappointing conclusion to an excellent trilogy. Despite being the title character, this is in no sense Raimu's film which is a great shame. Instead we focus on Césariot, the 20-year-old 'child' played by the 28-year-old André Fouché, who looks every one of those 28 years - and then some. Regrettably he is also a bad actor. Since the interplay between fine actors has been the chief joy of the trilogy, this is a major misstep. He is given two wrenching scenes with Orane Demazis as Fanny, in which she is touching and true, but in which Fouché has all of the emotional truth of a lump of cardboard.

  J'ai aimé Marius pour sa manière de dépeindre la vie quotidienne toute légère des commerçants du port de Marseille et sa beauté unique d'être un des tout premiers films sonore fait avec agilité et en décors naturels tout en gardant l'essence théâtrale de Pagnol,

  J'ai aimé Fanny pour sa plongée totale dans le méga drame familial mêlant le sombre à l'humour et sa mise en scène différente, c'est peut être quelque chose comme le Empire Stikes Back du cinéma provençal,

  J'ai aimé César parce que c'est quand même vraiment sympathique de pouvoir se taper une trilogie de très vieux films français avec son coloc. Aussi il y a un fondu en étoile entre deux scènes, à peine quelques minutes après avoir dit à mon coloc que c'est tout ce qu'il manquait au film. Bravo Pagnol

  Marius and Fanny play very much like two halves of a single epic melodrama, even though they weren't planned as such. César, on the other hand, feels fundamentally unnecessary, like an afterthought. Part of the problem is that jumping ahead 20 years necessitates multiple scenes in which characters recount what happened during those two decades—or, worse, narrate the previous films' plots in tedious detail (for the benefit of Césariot, who either wasn't yet born or was too young to remember). Mostly, though, this final chapter constitutes a crowdpleasing victory lap, devoting a good 40 minutes to Panisse's farewell and then engineering a happy ending for everyone else.   The weight of the past. The most moving entry in the trilogy. Pagnol seems to synthesize Korda’s and Allégret’s styles to arrive at this elegant exercise, comic to the same extent it is tragic, of characterizing elements in the present by opposition of what they once meant: the sea, windows, chairs, smiles and tears, everything has a bond, a city is sometimes like a family.

  I loved this trilogy. I want to recommend it to everyone, but I also like the silent fan base it has. It makes it even more special. I’ve just had such a fun time with these characters. There were scenes throughout the trilogy that had me laughing, while others had me on the verge of tears! Cesar is a great close to the trilogy. It has multiple callbacks to the first two films and the characters have aged so much, that it just feels reminiscent. I love how wise the character Cesar is. He always has these wonderful statements of wisdom.
