  A Hungarian-Bolivian who fought in the Croatian Civil Wars, a Catholic and Jewish communist, a mercenary who seems ambivalent at best about killing, Chico is apparently a real person, or was, and usually, in film, such a conglomerate person would be hand waved as impossible yet all too real, and therefore requiring no justification. In this film, the explanation and the resultant internal conflict are the centerpiece. Though this is a violent, dark film, with a mixture of documentary footage and staged action, the main conflict is entirely within the titular character.

  There is an almost nationalistic ideal running through this film about international peoples. As Chico argues on the phone with his father about joining a group of Croatians--arguing…

  So this was screened in one of my classes, and the director was there, who spoke broken English, and discussed the film after.
  Now while the film's sound design is quite impressive for it's time, the story is very confusing for those who were not directly involved Latin-American revolutions, the Croatian war in 91, and other political conflicts.
  Like the director literally said "Yeah if you don't know about what was happening overseas in Hungary around the 70s and 80s, you will not follow this film at all."
  Well I am very unaware of that time in Hungarian history, and therefore I was lost, confused, and bored the entire film.
  I really feel like this would have been a better movie if it provided context, set-up, explanation, background, history, prologue, anything.

  "Civil ezt nem értheti" - mondja Ricardo/Eduardo, és igaza van. Nem is értem igazán, nekem ez egyszerre érdekes, fárasztó, zavaros és különleges. Egyértelműen jó és egyértelműen túl hosszú, és filmként kb. annyira megfejthető, mint emberként a főszereplője. (10/8 - od)

  Chronicling the Latin America and East European (particularly Croatian) independence struggle through one man's eye. War elements as usual not my cup of tea, and I would have always wanted more on meta narrative level when you cast someone to play themselves and this film also wasted this opportunity.

  Igazi truváj ez a film. Ha a téma központi személye (Eduardo Rózsa Flores, világszabadságharcos hobbista) ma már nem biztos, hogy sokat mond, az önmagában fantasztikus, ahogyan ez az egész összeáll.

  Manapság már kb alap egy dokumentumfilmnél, hogy hozzáforgatnak megrendezett jeleneteket, de ez még ezen is csavar egy párat. Jóval azelőtt, hogy ez trendi lett volna. (De még azelőtt is, hogy a trendi szó létezett volna) Ahogy az archív felvételek egyszerű snittként vannak felhasználva a megírt, megrendezett- amúgy valós eseményeken alapuló - jelenetekben, és mindezt sokszor észre sem veszed, az nagyon nagy filmes bravúr.

  És akkor vannak olyan ínyencségek, hogy a címszereplő saját maga történetét játsza el színészként a filmben, és meséli el a "beszélő fejes" interjúkban is, és egy percig…
