Despite two impeccably cast leads, this two-movies-for-the -price-of-one resolutely refuses to engage primarily due to its ludicrous plot of a judge failing to recluse himself despite a personal connection with a juror.
However if the French judicial system is in any way accurately portrayed, then it is horrendously deficient.
The legal half of the story goes nowhere and the judge’s dilemma is scripted with minimal conviction

A judge presiding over a case recognises one of the members of the jury as a medical professional who cared for him several years before, and decides to reconnect with her.
Well, this is a film.
It's weird, because Courted shows so much promise. The actors are really good. The story itself, of the court case, is interesting, and the characters show promise. It's well filmed. But on the whole it comes across like the pilot for a TV show - it sets up scenarios and characters, but doesn't finish them. It's the sort of thing where if you had several more episodes, you'd get to know these characters more and you'd be able to develop more of a story…
In some ways this is a frustrating watch as the film takes two different story strands - a courtroom drama and a romantic comedy and mashes them together. However against the odds, it still comes out as a satisfying if not always well-balanced whole. The courtroom drama does suffer and while you spend a significant amount of time in the build-up of the case, the verdict comes as an anti-climax and the two main protagonists involved in the case disappear from view completely.
However the winning presence of Fabrice Luchini (who has a face for light comedy yet displays a steely gravitas underneath it) and Sidse Babett Knudsen showing impassive but luminous grace (not allowing her character just to "fall for" Lucini's chief judge) propel this to another level so you do care about their characters and the outcome of a suspended relationship. If that makes me seem too sappy, then I'm guilty as charged.
Romance of the subtle kind. We follow a trial, one that's completely irrelevant in the scheme of things, while the judge and a juror have flirt during the breaks. Sweet in a wholesome adult way, but at the same time what a waste of a courtroom!
i think it's great at what it wants to be, that is a touching but also light and funny drama, concerned in its characters, and where subjects that matter are brought up along the way.
but while it's really well paced - didn't see the 98 min go by - it didn't procure me any strong emotion/reaction. just good and smart.
ps. luchini's fever thing was kind of weird. very present in the first half but doesn't play any role and disapears here and there quite conveniently.
NUMMER 2 FRANSKE FILM.
A. Bendtsens yndlingsfilm… *TROMMELHVIRVEL*…
