I’ve always appreciated Jeremy Davies because he has this quality like he’s trying to sell the audience something illegal. Like I’m at a community college baseball field and I have to follow him behind the bleachers to buy a bootleg copy of Donnie Darko.
This film works so well visually but if it wasn’t up its own ass for almost half the runtime I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more
I’ve had an eighteen-year long relationship with this movie. It’s not a movie I’d recommend to anyone I know. I’m not gonna say it’s great but I love it to pieces. It’s extremely fun and relatable and I don’t find it the least bit pretentious. CQ is comfort food.
My old buddy/drummer of my cusp of 2000s garage-punk (and eventually) post-punk band The Lips Poul was obsessed with this movie. He was an aspiring filmmaker and not only shared Jeremy Davies’ character’s name but had a girlfriend like Marlene. He’s the one that convinced me to give it another go after my initial theatrical experience.

Roman really got the look and feel of 60s Paris, the French New Wave aesthetic is primo, and even the music has that cheap sci-fi flavor. If you enjoy movies about the making of movies and how an editor from America transplants to France, thrust into directing despite no experience when the first director (Depardeu) was expelled for not heeding to the Italian producer's (Giannini) wishes for a big slam bang action finale and new director (Schwartzman) suffers injury in a car accident (his eyes were off the road), then this might interest you.

Almost perfectly on the mid-line between good and bad, CQ is multiple movies about movies all at once, sometimes a flimsy pretext to make a 1969/70-style sci-fi exploitation film and sometimes a commentary on studio vs. art, though it’s definitely deficient in regards to the latter. I have no idea why Roman Coppola doesn’t direct more films he writes. It’s no wonder Wes Anderson has collabed with him on his last 4 films. Roman’s films are so creative, pleasing to the eye and fun. He really has a grasp on visual flair and he always comes up with interesting ways of telling a story.
