In what really was a 30 second shootout out in a 15–20-foot narrow lot became the largest gunfight within the mythos of the wild west. Disillusionment In Sun-Drenched 1970s American New Wave Cinema: A Watching Brief
There have been a fair few westerns in this project, and by the very nature of when they were made they have largely been revisionist in nature.
It could be seen as quite curious in a way that films that are set many decades before the 1970s could fit the remit here, but they really do. Part of the reason why the western was so highly revised in the 1970s is because people became increasingly curious about the true history of the west and what really happened. In great part, they became disillusioned with what they had been told for over 50 years in cinema in the genre.

Revisionist take on Wyatt Earp that's not interested in legend or myth and uses the story as a character study of morally ambiguous men. The movie puts Doc Holliday front and center and uses his situation as a dying man to examine legacy, regret, friendship and loyalty. The Earp seen here is not a straight edged lawman and his crusade to clean up Tombstone is rooted in greed and a lust for power. It's the most interesting take on Earp and Holliday I've seen outside of Tombstone.
A few of my LB buddies have logged and reviewed several different Frank Perry films in recent weeks, finally giving me that much needed shove to check out his Western from 1971, Doc, which offers a very different account of the friendship between Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp, and that now infamous gunfight at the OK Corral.

What a dirty, punchy little film. This is a movie that seems very held together by the acting and especially by Stacey Keach as the titular character. This feels very dry in it's edits moving from scene to scene with very sharp cuts just focusing on the necessary beats of action to happen then moving on to the next story piece which in a way reminded me a bit like "Breathless". I do like the subplot of the local newsman's skepticism in Wyatt Earp's intent to become local sheriff of Tombstone. I know that this tale has been told many times over and have watched a lot of them but this was an interesting spin on the narrative. I'm slowly working my way the the Frank Perry filmography and this was a good one.

It's very revisionist and tries to turn the western genre around by stripping it of its tendencies to hero worship iconic figures such as Wyatt Earp, or the myths we've been fed about the famous O.K. Throughout the runtime I was thinking Stacy Keach was too old to be playing Doc Holliday, who was only around 30 during the shootout at the OK Corral. So I was suitably shocked to learn that Keach was only 29 when this film was made. Man, they do not make 29 year-olds that look like that anymore.
Age-appropriate lead aside, Frank Perry's Doc takes a few liberties with the events it covers, yet it's still a very entertaining film (even if it seems to lose some of its mojo heading into the climax). A rail-thin Keach makes a very good Doc, and while not as charismatic as Val Kilmer in Tombstone, he does get some choice one-liners, as does Faye…
The tagline here basically reveals the movie’s whole angle - “For the past 90 years these three people have been heroes. Until now!” Textbook revisionist western, perhaps to the exclusion of all else - there’s a singleminded determination at play here to fucking eviscerate the notion of old western heroes, make sure any latent glorification of what happened in Tombstone the audience may have coming in is torn out of them by the time they leave (over the single coldest, most cynical credits scroll I’ve ever seen, no less. As far as movies about O.K. Corral Gunfight go, this is a weird and bold one, not because the story is told from prespective of Doc Holliday, rather it feels like this one is trying to deconstruct the way event was told and characters were portrayed in prior adaptations. I wish I could bump-up extra half star, but as much as I know what this is trying to go for, it can be excruciatingly boring at times and performances are occasionally rigid and stiff. But still there are a lot to love about in director Frank Perry's Doc
