A British Corporal in France finds himself responsible for the lives of his men when their officer is killed. He has to get them back to Britain somehow. Meanwhile, British civilians are being dragged into the war with Operation Dynamo, the scheme to get the French and British forces back from the Dunkirk beaches. Some come forward to help, others were less willing.

Why are people going crazy for this film? All I hear at work is “Have you seen Dunkirk?” “Have you seen Dunkirk?” It wasn’t that good.
much like the other Dunkirk this covers a few stories that has a fun British cast that captured a lot of different opinions on the war as it was really just starting to crystalize in the civilians lives and what it means. Lots of dynamic narratives that pollinate the fracturing of a European landscape that felt heartbreaking at times really the dread of being stuck on that beach as these soldiers had to endure constant bombing with nowhere to hide felt nightmarish. They captured the tragedy but also the humanistic spirit with these boats bringing some but not all of these soldiers home. Really gut punching material but one that you could see as a unifier cause really this was not the end just the end of the beginning.
Widely considered to be one of the essential British war films, 1958's Dunkirk is a film that I knew very little about apart from the fact that it is about one of the key turning points of the Second World War. It is a film that I have been interested in checking out for ages as I've always found how this period in history has been presented in film, especially in the years that immediately followed the end of the conflict, to be incredibly interesting. I did have high expectations for Dunkirk and while it didn't necessarily blow me away, I still found it to be a very interesting film.

I well remember watching Dunkirk as a child and finding its dispassionate, pessimistic view almost too much to bear. Scenes have remained with me down the years, most notably those relentless chilling Stuka attacks. For a child who was perhaps a bit too familiar with the Boys Own style of war, where people get shot and fall down with just a trickle of blood, this was grim and bloody stuff.

I recently watched Dunkirk (1958) on Tubi. The film follows the German forces making significant headway against the British and French on the beaches of Dunkirk. As extreme casualties mount, some soldiers must step into leadership roles to lead their men to safety, where they can regroup, shift from defense to offense, and hopefully slow the German invasion.

Oh man I love Harry Styles
Surprisingly more cynical and substantive than the Nolan blockbuster, though the two films are very different entities altogether so can't really be compared. The events of Dunkirk have now become immortalised in historical legend but when this film was made the war was not that long ago and most of the people involved in it had actually lived through it or even taken part in some way, as had the audiences who would have seen the film in cinemas so there was a tenable duty to get things right in terms of accuracy.

If there's one thing that us Brits can do better than failing it is making a virtue out of that failure, which is pretty much how we view what happened at Dunkirk in 1940.
What remained of the British Expeditionary Force was caught out as the Germans pushed into Belgium and France and were herded into an enclave around the French port where they were bombed by the Luftwaffe while a flotilla of ships and boats were engaged to somehow rescue more than a third of a million men back to England in the space of 8 days.

Absolutely LOVED this telling of the Dunkirk incident - Mills and Attenborough deliver fantastic performances. An underrated classic if there ever was one.
Given that Dunkirk played to audiences in 1958 it’s undeniable that many of the real men who had found themselves tiptoeing through Nazi infested France with dwindling resources and diminishing hopes of survival, holding their breath at what lay behind every field and hedgerow or what lurked in the skies above their heads, will have taken their seats at the local cinema, whilst the men and women who had at least known someone (and potentially even lost someone; 3,500 British soldiers were killed during the operation) who had endured such an experience, will no doubt have sat beside them. It’s hard for us modern viewers to contemplate what emotions and memories the film stirred within them, but it’s irrefutable that…

The Dramatic events leading up to Operation Dynamo. thought this was not a great war film, as it was hard to enjoy this from start to end credits.
