  Human history has always been a repetition of construction and deconstruction, revolution after revolution, the punk and the mainstream, but in the end all we did was just transitioning from a form into the new other. Music is the same, "Can music exist independently of politics?", the transition from Classical to Romanticism, from the perfection of harmony and mathematics, to the spontaneity of expression. Beethoven was basically the punk of the era, ugliness is necessary to start the revolution against oppressions. But just as Napoleon declared himself as emperor, the punk might soon become the mainstream, and when self-expression has become the new objectivity, the new oppression, the punk would soon rebel against the old punk. The tug of war between art and anti-art, between meaning and purposeful meaninglessness. The opposite of everything is meaningful, and likewise.

  Eroica has very much the feel of something one would be shown in a music appreciation class. With statements either underlining the conceptual implications of Beethoven's composition in a historical context, or the characteristics of the piece that explains it's cultural importance making up a great deal of the relatively sparse dialogue, it doesn't quite place among the most smoothly developing scripts ever written. But even before starting the film one might (I certainly did) have the expectation that this is a film meant primarily to be informative.   Watched this in my orchestra history course. It is such a focused and detailed film, and I really appreciated the way it let's the symphony speak for itself. The editing does a great job highlighting just how unbelievably challenging this piece was to listeners at the time.

  I internally soyjacked when Ries popped off about the horn coming in four bars early for the recapitulation.

  As Hayden said, Beethoven placed himself at the centre of his work, he gives us a glimpse into his soul; that's why it's so noisy. A bunch of discords can make some extraordinary pieces of music, nature makes this kind of music , but we don't notice, Beethoven loved nature and we can hear its voice in his screamingly beautiful music.
