“Familiar” is outstanding. It does begin with issues that many viewers can relate to. Daily routines, hearing others vent about their problems and the sense of loneliness within a family are all too familiar. What is great about Richard Powell’s short is how the early black comedy seamlessly blends into a second half horror flick. Discussing the second half would do a disservice to the setup of “Familiar,” so it is best to simply assure curious viewers that the short film is a worthy entry in horror and genre festivals looking for a cinematic Red Bull to get the crowd buzzing. If “Familiar” is playing at a festival, check it out regardless of what title it is attached to. It may very well trump the feature that plays after.
