A young ad executive's life has been turned upside down when a vicious client ruins his three billion yen project. Through his chance meeting with the disgruntled daughter of his enemy, he plans a vengeance scheme. The young woman agrees to play the victim of his bogus kidnapping. The movie is based on the novel Geimu No Na Wa Yuukai ('The name of the game is kidnapping') by popular mystery novelist Keigo Higashino.

A very plot-driven Neo Noir which tells a twisty-turny story but ultimately stumbles over not knowing when to stop. So we get one plot twist after another and another while plot holes remain.
Even though it at least kept my interest, the characters are completely underwritten and only plot devices plus the weak cast didn't help either in that regard.
Overall, this game wasn't all that great and Hideo Nakata's CHAOS did tell the story much better.

Fun thriller with a couple of good twists.

a luxurious suspenser on life's uneven playing fields and their predisposition to double crosses. stimulates with craftily cerebral deceptions of excusably egotistic motivations. but underscores that winning means losing an aspect of personhood or vice versa. for the mechanics given to players are but cunningly obtuse designs of existence. so game the game.
i have to disclose tho that The Name Of The Game Is A Kidnapping is my fave Higashino novel (out of those that i've read so far). and it just tracks for the plot/scheme to still hold me captive despite being flipped in a different medium. it also helps that during the entire runtime, i wanted to fuck my screen captors. but not due to stockholm syndrome. after all, this is a consented abduction!
So early 2000s it hurts.
Could be an american production with Nic Cage in it and no one would bat an eye. Would also mean i wouldn't have watched it.

A well crafted suspense drama of deception where battle of the minds takes the story to its climax. The plot has so many twisty turns it's sometimes a little difficult to follow , it reminded me on the oldschool Yakuza games including the soundtrack. The acting compliments the story extremely well. Overall an enjoyable couple of hours.
