My former boss made this film in the late 90s and Nitehawk happened to be screening it as part of their “The Outskirts” series of films that fell into obscurity. It doesn’t get much more obscure than this; never released on home video or streaming, only occasionally screening late at night on Showtime in the early 2000’s (I imagine there are a handful of insomniacs who saw this 20 years ago and have no way of finding it). Everyone in the film is super likable (Fred Schneider from the B52’s gives it his all as the normcore boyfriend). This film is incredibly charming and captivating coming of age story, despite its low budget and amateur nature. Fun and gritty, it really captures adolescence while channeling the pathos of “Out of the Blue,” the wild provocations of Nick Zedd, and the punk absurdity of Jon Moritsugu. Seek it out if you can. You’ll finish with a smile. Oh and it has Fred Fuckin’ Schneider in a prominent role!
