Mark my words, I will never crap on a movie that makes the case for being kind and generous. But this Leo McCarey feel-good comedy is too derivative, sluggishly paced and slight to get behind whole-heartedly.

This was both heartwarming and infuriating. Gary Cooper reminded me of my mother and how annoying good, kindhearted people can be sometimes.

It wasn't as charming as I had hoped and some of the scenes went on painfully long. Add to that the repetitiveness of the plot and you've got an average movie experience. Little Lulu was hilarious, though.

Leo McCarey's loose, almost improvisational, style has a quirky and charming naturalism which is highlighted in this misfire of a movie, starring Gary Cooper and Ann Sheridan, about a suburban good Samaritan who is exploited by those he helps. It’s been called "Capraesque", a satirical black comedy and a Capraesque satirical black comedy. As a failure it's fascinating. Overlong (and I saw the 114 minute version apparently it was originally 128 minutes!), episodic and uneven it still has a number of memorable scenes thanks largely to the always terrific Sheridan. This almost is a great movie. Mostly just think about what it would have been like for Gary Cooper to go from to appearing as a friendly witness before HUAC from filming this particular movie. In terms of things not being on the level, this movie isn't on the level of Leo McCreary. Though there are of course glimpses of McCreary's charm, it is still clearly a McCreary picture. Ann Sheridan was absolutely above the level too. In this she was even streets ahead.
