heavy-handedly saying that the movie industry is bad and traditional middle class life is good? stale, boring, the coldest of takes
getting super horned-up over dharmendra? fresh, timeless, pure cinemaaaa
one of those films where I somehow know all the songs lmfao what goes on. anyway there’s a lot to unpack here so I’m gonna go off:
- I know it’s just a silly bollywood film but please, how hard would it have been to put kusum in COLLEGE instead of school. kaunse shareef ghar mein school ke baad directly shaadi karni padti hai. forget after, I’m pretty sure they were discussing marriage DURING her school year and I’m just like.. err okay. wouldn’t have been as awkward if she was a third year college student but at the same time she would’ve probably been more interested in a career than getting married. anywho it’s bollywood I guess
- there…
Cinema in cinema
Not the first time Hrishikesh Mukherjee indulged in meta filmmaking, mostly referencing his very own Anupama. He went on to do something similar with Rang Birangi. But like always there's simplicity in how he approaches his subjects. There's joy in the little things, when Guddi arrives home, the joy of snacking after school, the joy of watching films. In my opinion one of his finest films.
Another day, another deeply problematic film that I found charming and... wait for it... relatable not in a mild sense but in a "OH MY GOD THIS FILM WAS WRITTEN FOR ME OH MY GOD I FEEL SEEN" sense.
There's something so effortlessly cute and peaceful about Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films and it's the easiest thing to get drawn into the worlds he creates. I loved how attached Kusum/Guddi and her bhabhi were to each other and how both of them always thought of the other's well-being and looked out for her!!! There was so much warmth in that relationship, I could easily watch the film again just to smile with the two of them.
The film itself was so full…
I'm guddi but with shah rukh khan 🙈
Guddi is a light-hearted film anchored by Jaya Bhaduri's naïve yet charming performance. The film has a frivolous premise, and the writing is pretty convenient; it is also fairly regressive, but I guess that is okay considering the time period in which it was made. I get the message that the film aims to convey about teens' obsession with celebrities, pop culture, and fictional characters and how it impacts their mental health, but I just don't like preposterous storytelling that, in my opinion, could have been done so much better and more profoundly. The film's first half is enjoyable and lively, but the second half drags a little; I liked how they showed the contrast between the glitz and glamour…
Guddi is a takedown of the glamours, glossy world of cinema. Looking at life through a cinema lover’s eye, Mukherjee sees through her obsession with a star to an extent that she can’t look beyond. He uses her coming of age arc to investigate privilege in any line of work.
yo this has to be one of the most hilarious Hrishikesh Mukharjee movies and ridiculously surprising coming of age dramas ❤️ 😌
I've always been a fan of Jaya Bachchan because of a stable and grounded dissemination of emotions from her face. Dharmendra in his most creative role yet, as the film star on whom Jaya has a unwavering crush.
With cameos by big shots like Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughna Sinnha, and an amazing Prem Chopra, you can't miss this precious addition to Mukharjee's œuvre. Also, what a testimony to Utpal Dutt's comedic prowess and overall skills as one of India's greatest actors.
A teenage girl fantasises about her favourite Bollywood star at the expense of a potential suitor for marriage in this surprisingly weak and sappy effort by Mukherjee.

Jaya's first film and how she shines with full glory which happens invariably in a romcom where the lady is the sole lead! She was chosen on Asrani's recommendation to Mr Mukherjee when he on a visit to the FTII. The scene where young Guddi reminisces about becoming Mira and wandering in search of her Krishna is the most funny moment of the 70s Bollywood.
Jai Dharmeandra! 😳🙏
Uttpal Dutt is top tier and I cannot stress this enough 🥺🥺
