Shoeshiner Marcel (André Wilms) tries to help an immigrant child stranded in his port city evade the authorities and find safety, in Aki Kaurismäki‘s comedy-drama co-starring Kati Outinen, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Blondin Miguel, Évelyne Didi and Jean-Pierre Léaud.
I haven’t seen any of Kaurismäki’s work before, but his minimalist, retro style is really memorable and distinctive, adding a lot to the fairly straightforward story. The tone is deliberately restrained and laidback, which gives the character interactions space to breathe, avoiding melodramatic moments for a more understated way of telling the story.
The characters are treated with lots of empathy and warmth, never looked down on or played for laughs, and Kaurismäki seems to have great affection and compassion for the foibles…
