  Fits into the same bucolic milieu as The Tsugua Diaries, though this one is more focused on generational shifts away from rural life and a critique of uppercrust wastefulness. There is one gorgeous shot of the three generations of women framed in a door way from the TV to the dinning room to the kitchen that is repeated a few times, with changes each time, that I loved.

  Minha relação com "Légua" é toda torta, mas muito especial. Tudo começou no Festival de Cannes, quando peguei uma sessão do longa de Filipa Reis e João Miller Guerra às 23h, depois de um dia em que comecei a ver filmes às 9h. Estava cansado, mas fiquei fascinado pelo registro sereno da rotina de uma mulher que decide ajudar a amiga mais velha a cuidar de uma casa cujos donos foram embora. De uma maneira muito simples, a dupla de diretores constrói as duas personagens com cuidado, observando os detalhes de seu cotidiano doméstico, enquanto documentam um lugar de onde as pessoas precisam se afastar para seguir a vida.

  When people leave, they never come back.

  Légua is a slow, quiet portrait of three generations of women in a Portuguese family. It’s more of an unremarkable, passive observation than an active commentary, dragging every aspect of its underwhelming simplicity to the maximum.

  João Miller Guerra & Filipa Reis’s latest film “Légua” is a solemn piece of observational cinema that touches on transcendentalism through its depiction of three generations of women living in a house they work in as custodial staff. They upkeep a manor in northern Portugal in exchange for room and board, eking out their existence in an increasingly desperate and beautiful countryside. The film primarily depicts the day-to-day life and habits of the women who keep the building running similar to the recent Sight & Sound poll winner “Jeanne Dielmann,” the manor is presented alternatingly as the families lifeblood and prison in such a way that one might compare the relationship of the central women and manor to that of vines deeply…

  If you want to be extremely involved in a film, engrossed into a film, waiting just waiting, so much that you’re on the edge of your seat, thinking about the film thinking about when is this going to end, I need to get out of here.
