I wholly support using the majority of the budget on monster makeup.
I also understand why the colloquial dialogue and unexpected musical interludes would surprise and delight some viewers.
So, good on you filmmakers! I’m glad you were able to make the movie you wanted to within a small budget and without distorting your vision by accepting money from ‘the man.’
Also, on a personal note, I thought this movie sucked.
Lo is one hell of an underrated gem. This doesn't necessarily mean it's the greatest thing ever made, nor does it mean it is worth passing up. It's just one of those few feature films worth checking out, as it's destined to wind up on one of those "Top 10 Films You've Never Heard Of" lists. The movie is a very well executed take on the love comes in all shapes and forms ideal, as a young man summons a demon in order to retrieve his soulmate, who so happens to be trapped in hell.
Very low(no pun intended)on budget and high in vitality, Lo is presented almost like a performance art package or community college…
9/10
More of a rom-com than a horror film, but that's okay with me. I don't mind. What we get here is an amazing accomplishment for low-budget films. It has an innovative style of storytelling, and multiple twists throughout it that keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't see the ending coming, I promise.
It's the theater kid take on Faust, and it's a lot better than you'd think. Although I have to ask, what was up with the Nazi twink demon?
A wonderful stage play made into a movie. Track this one down.
I… uhm… what? I’m so confused. I think I like the idea of a horror love story more than I care to admit, but dude, I have no idea what I just watched. Maybe I’ll try this again drunk. Maybe I’ll just forget it exists.
The film equivalent of a Benadryl trip.
Still better than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Despite being billed as a comedy, I didn't laugh during Lo. For most of the film I admired it's simple stagey set-up and the excellent demon make-up. But in the last 20 minutes or so, the film's emotional force snuck up on me and I found myself incredibly moved. A simple twist rethinks our entire understanding of the narrative, grounding this fantastical tale in something as mundane and wonderful as a love story. One shot in this broke my heart.
Been wanting to watch this ever since it came out, when I saw that stunning poster in Empire magazine. But the generic title and rarity of the film (which goes for about $100 on eBay) made this one of my…
this was so fucking funny. i want a sassy little scary demon in my life to clock me on my shit
I liked this, and I think it’s pretty hard not to be moved by it. It might’ve been more of a 3.5 for me, but I admire the ambition and the fact that it was made so much that that earns it an extra half-star. Also, Demon Girl has gotten stuck in my head several times since I watched this and I am very upset that it’s not on Spotify.
this was such a fun watch I was willing to sit through a 240p quality version of it
this movie felt like an episode of buffy the vampire slayer
I probably would've enjoyed this more as a full-fledged stage production than as an obvious play repurposed with some additional camera angles to try to be a movie.
This does have an ambitious low-budget premise and some seriously impressive makeup and practical visuals. The acting is exactly what you'd expect, with the only real highlight being the titular Lo himself. He's a fun character, but wavers between menacing demon and stand-up comedian a bit too loosely to be really defined and memorable.
Unfortunately there's a bit too much filler here, especially with the two musical numbers that really drag this down. And whether intentional or not, a couple too many Evil Dead vibes really pulled me out of the film.…
