Before you think about watching this film I feel obligated to tell you there is a musical number where a bunch of southerners sing about how Lucille Ball is the best thing to happen to the south since Robert E Lee as a women older than the country screams “The south will rise again!” At the top of her lungs.
A legendary trainwreck and a fascinating historical document.
MAME was doomed from the start. Warner Bros. could have done it almost a decade earlier with original star Angela Lansbury reprising what was arguably her most iconic stage performance. Lansbury got rejected in favor of Lucille Ball, whose TV fame was assumed to make her a bigger draw.
Lucy suffered an unrelated injury, causing director George Cukor to bail. He was replaced by the Broadway production’s Gene Saks. Then Lucy felt threatened by Madeline Kahn (the scene-stealer playing Gooch) and had her replaced with Broadway’s Jane Connell, and Bea Arthur (Saks’ wife) joined as Vera - which must have been awkward since she was Lansbury’s original co-star and real life best…
Classic fifteen-act structure
i pride myself on being the only person on the planet to love this movie. i’m sure angela lansbury was great as mame (though i’ll never know because that woman annoys me so much sorry sorry can’t watch her in anything) but this is different and it’s not a bad different!! everyone plays mame differently and i think that’s great. and everyone saying lucy was miscast in this sorry babes you are WRONG!!!
Having seen Auntie Mame, this movie was a huge letdown. Lucille Ball has just so miscast. Angela Lansbury would have been so much better. Robert Preston and Bea Arthur were highlights, and "We Need a Little Christmas" is a great song. What a miss this musical was...had so much potential.
maybe if this movie had just been bosom buddies for 2 hours straight it would be 5 stars
This was awful. Especially seeing it right after rewatching Auntie Mame. Lucille Ball was not meant to be a part of this. She far outgrew this kind of acting from before I Love Lucy, and honestly she can't sing. The sound editing is awful. The costumes were hit and miss. Not to mention the story is just a water downed summary of the original Auntie Mame. The editing is horrendous. (I mean we are supposed to understand her husband is killed in avalanche how??) Not to mention the character Auntie Mame is made into a much colder character who doesn't seem quite as endearing. Then the other characters are reduced to one dimensional at best. It's a bit appalling.
However, I will say Bea Arthur is a beacon of light in this very bleak adaptation.

The music numbers sadly were the same
Bea Arthur lifts things up a notch
Though on the whole it is a botch
I just cannot wait to rewatch Mame!
