Alain raises his deaf son Milano alone and wants to give him a better life than he has, but despite the best intentions, his failure becomes apparent. Their father-son relationship comes under pressure when Milano wants to meet his biological mother.

I'm a fan of films from Belgium and wanted to watch this unusual take on father/son relationships. It's quite long, and moves very slowly focussing quite a lot on the windy, rainy Belgian climate.
Alain is struggling, he's a single father living in a run down part of town, works as a kitchen assistant and supplements his income by growing and selling small amounts of cannabis. His son, Milano, is a deaf mute whose mother left when he was a baby. He can hear with the aid of a (bone conduction?) device but though he's told he could learn to speak he resists this.
Milano is unhappy, he rarely, if ever, smiles. His father has worked hard to bring him…
🪴 My hopes for this movie where pretty high but it did not really live up to my expectations. The choice to let someone who actually has a hearing disability to play Milano was a very good one that gives the movie something special, and Matteo Simoni also acts very well. But the story is just nothing special and the same as lot of other Flemish movies. The runtime of 2 hours is also to long for this story and it could have been told in 90 minutes. So in the end it is definitely not the worst film of the year but it does not have a lot new to it. 🦮

Maar het is een film over probleemgezinnen met ouders die een drank/drugsprobleem hebben? En we gaan zo een lelijke filter erop plakken om alles te benadrukken! En hij duurt te lang, is repetitief en gaat eigenlijk nergens over! Zeg maar soort van ramptoerist spelen bij de lagere sociale klasse!

Deze film heeft me voor de eerste keer in m'n leven (buiten die ene keer met het Nesquik konijn) laten huilen in de cinema.

Deze hedendaagse biezenstekker in een sentimenteel jasje kon mij niet bekoren. Ik heb even de recensies opgezocht en inderdaad: Matteo Simoni die spaghetti snijdt is het meest spraakmakende aan deze film.
