When Monogamy began I thought it seemed like a low-key, somewhat navel-gazing indie about a couple living in NYC. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff. However, I was pleased to find that it quickly dropped hints of being more than that, and that it was trying to subvert expectations. Unfortunately, though, that "darker" element then fell apart almost immediately, leaving me to long for the generic but inoffensive banter of the film's first fifteen minutes.
