It was a even mixture of Moon, The Truman Show, The Martian and Kangaroo Jack.
Chinese blockbuster sci-fi comedy about a mediocre janitor on a moon base who gets left behind all by himself when everyone evacuates before a destructive meteor shower hits. What's he gonna do? The female astronaut he was secretly pining for took off so he'll never get his chance, and the comms were busted by the meteors so even with indefinite supplies and a functioning compound, he's doomed to be a lonely cast away forever. Or is he?
Surprises abound in this sometimes rather cartoony, but overall engrossing and charmingly fanciful, incidental and inventive re-imagining of "The Martian". One minute it's brainstorming realistically for solutions, another minute it's utterly absurd, but it's got a real knack for goosing up the big…
thanks to this movie I finally understand that Take Me Home, Country Roads is about a man and a kangaroo on the moon who save humanity 🌛 it's amazing to watch a blockbuster action movie that leaves you feeling exhilarated instead of exhausted
This month's mystery movie post Clip Party (which was Halloween themed as per tradition for the month of October) ended up being this Chinese film which was the 11th highest grossing film of 2022 if you take the international box office into account. It was a rather substantial hit in China grossing several hundred million which is funny because this is essentially "The Martian" meets "The Truman Show" with a kangaroo thrown in for some insane reason. Credit my friend Eli for going with this as his mystery movie cause sheltered American that I am, I had never heard of this before and had fun kinda being like "What am I watching here?" in the same way I do whenever…
ดูแล้วอยากไปต่อยกับจิงโจ้ที่ออส
better than Dune
went on a whim in a slow movie week for this one, shout out to the amc app
really fun, warm, gripping throughout
the kangaroo is a choice but i get it
love a big action comedy that relies upon collective action and sacrifice for the greater good, thank you communism
all the little moments feel very iannucci- precise & well-observed, but when it goes big it commits all the way
also an optimistic dystopia is really interesting to me
the “you are not alone”/“you are no one” joke obvs doesn’t play as quickly if you don’t read chinese but it’s a great little capper on a moment that honestly made me cry
love the cover/new lyrics version of take me home, country roads?! v interesting to hear a song with a lot of cultural baggage for me used in a way that means it probably does not have the same attachments in china- but idk!
A wild crowdpleaser that's amusing enough to call a successful comedy. Sure, the fact that it's about global annihilation and is remarkably earnest feels like a weird decision for a movie which spends half the running time watching the protagonist fight a kangaroo in space. But I think it all works on all the levels it wants to work. It's a comedy with heart... it just so happens that the funny parts are very silly. Moon Man is effectively cloying and sometimes made me laugh out loud. And like... that's what this type of big-budget comedy needs to do.
A woman falls for a guy that spent YEARS yearning for and not interacting with her!?
So you’re telling me there’s a chance
After that, I don't see how I can go back to watching movies about astronauts who aren't also kangaroos.
Showed up ridiculously late to the theater and walked in to see a man attempting to seduce a kangaroo.
And it only went uphill
65/100
Essentially, this is the Chinese equivalent of The Martian, but this guy is stranded on the Moon and the Earth is in ruins after a meteorite crashes into it. So its plot has enough changes to not be a blatant plagiarism.
Nevertheless, even with certain deviations, the film maintains an engaging and humorous spirit that renders it enjoyable, no matter how implausible it may appear.
Although its romantic/emotional/dramatic twist seems a bit forced to justify its climax and resolution, ultimately the film manages to be entertaining and for me that was clearly its purpose, so it's good enough.
