joker for british guys
thank you david thewlis for making my brain go "i can fix him" when he portrays maybe the worst human being on earth
have wanted to watch this for years and for having finally gotten around to it i think i’ll give myself a pat on the back. which isn’t to say it’s boring or disturbing. it’s bleak, but that’s not what makes it a (purposeful) slog to get through. just very confrontational and uncomfortable. the dude goes around and ruins everyone’s day but those people only had to hear his speech once, think about us! used every bone in my body not to make my post simply “this is joker but with more words.” david thewlis is really good in this too.
“You think you can recapture your youth by fucking it. You don't wanna fuck me. You'll catch something cruel.”
Mike Leigh’s Naked is a riveting parable brimming with a scornful wit and humanity unseen through initial viewing. The film chronicles the exploits of the sardonic and nihilistic vagabond, Johnny, a man who is first introduced as he brutally rapes a young woman in a back alleyway. Fearing the repercussions of his actions, Johnny flees to the streets of London. There, he tries to justify his existence by ranting to strangers and shaming their beliefs. And for the next two hours, we are forced to accompany the far from empathetic Johnny as he wanders around London, oppressing the lives of everyone…
I don’t wish to die, but
I wish that I did not exist.
i have a million complicated feelings about this

How to review your favourite film, or even worse, how to review your favourite film when that film is Mike Leigh's Naked?
Naked starts of rough and only gets bleeker. But that's only a small part of what makes this a masterpiece.
First and foremost Naked is abouth David Thewlis' character Johnny, unenmployed both by choice and by circumstance, who personifies the ugly side most commonly shoved under the carpet in favour of the success stories. Yes, we're talking post-Thatcher Britain, but as far as I can tell there's many similairities to present time, and the world Leigh shows us is not limited to a certain era. But it might be limited to big cities.
Johnny is a man who…
What if Before Sunrise was set amongst brutal squalor and only explored ideas of nihilistic existentialism and any romance was conveyed as violent abuse and all the joy was replaced with vomit and despair?
That’s Naked and it’s perfect.
" I've got an infinite number of places to go, the problem is where to stay."
Favorite Mike Leigh movie. There’s nothing like it. Set in post-Thatcher England, this is an endlessly fascinating satiric critique of the society, an existential tragicomedy and an utterly bleak character study about a guy who's on a self-destructive journey. David Thewlis’s portrayal of nihilistic, obnoxious, funny & pitiable Johnny is one of the greatest performances ever.
I'm so torn on how to rate this.
On the one hand, it was a brilliantly made film. The acting was amazing, the cinematography was amazing, and the soundtrack was AMAZING.
On the other hand, I didn't relate to or like the characters, I wasn't blown away by the philosophical monologues, and something about it made it seem vaguely... Wrong.
I don't know, objectively it was a good film but it didn't speak to me in the way it did to others.
"Have you ever thought, right, I mean, you don't know, but you might already have had the happiest moment in your whole fucking life, and all you've got to look forward to is sickness and purgatory?"
