Magical realism, teen romance, female emancipation, warmth and humour. All somehow convincingly found in the bombed-out remains of one Damascus household.
Nezouh takes place during a siege that has seen the central family's district become mostly evacuated. Mutaz (Samer al Masri), the patriarch, stubbornly refuses to accept the inevitable, offended by the shame of becoming displaced. He insists to his wife Hala (Kinda Halloush) and youngest daughter Zeina (Hala Zein) that they stay put. His denial is comedic; he even imagines that his elder daughters, who have been married off and have fled along with everyone else, are still in the house. Mutaz's insistence reaches farcical levels after a…

While there is a lot of potential, NEZOUH never knows what it wants to be. Instead of finding their own style, the producers sadly decided to haphazardly throw together as many ideas, shots, and genres they could think of. Especially the slapstick-ish comedy approaches were out of place and never allowed the viewers to really connect with the movie‘s characters. This lack of consequence, paired with some rather mediocre acting performances, make the whole movie a sometimes quite lengthy watch - especially towards the end.

Even though it is a film whose background is a bloody war, the narrative takes us to a very pure, simple and dreamy place in which a girl taking her first steps into adulthood lives. The scenes are very beautiful, especially the images with sheets. In the midst of the destruction of the war, I felt a certain peace. After all, the sea will remain sea even after the bombings.

Really really loved this. Syrian director Soudade Kaadan with a beautiful film, laced with magical realism. Set in the later part of the war in Syria, it's hopeful and funny but not unserious. an incredibly good way to make a war-set film
Grazie
Sweet like a date under Damasco bombs

A besieged and denied Damascus where "everyday is a mortar" and really doesnt matter how many bombs miss or land, cause even though yet far away, the sea will still be there for us all in the end, even if it just becomes a bright image on a face, from the reflection of a makeshift screening-room rooftop.
As a fishergirl can cast a lifeline in that alternate ocean of hope, while still giving back a smile to a jasmine flower, as brighter memories can still be shared, turning a warzone into a magical dreamzone, of displacement, replacement and eventual renewal.
