  May 2023: Theme of the Month - Contemporary Irish Cinema

  In choosing films for this series, I was coming up with mostly male directors. Remembering how much I liked Pat Walsh's Maeve, which looked at the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland from a feminist perspective, I decided to visit another of her films, this one a biopic of the complicated relationship between James Joyce and his partner/muse Nora Barnacle. Turned out to be a real misfire.

  Joyce first met Nora when she was a maid at the hotel/pub he frequented with fellow writers. There was an illicit erotic excitement in each other from the start and before long, Joyce whisks Nora away to Trieste where they live as husband and common-law…

  Susan Lynch ❤

  I mean, if there was any justice in the world, Susan Lynch would be a huge star. Ewan McGregor may skillfully convey the mercurial complexities of James Joyce - hopelessly romantic and boyish one moment, devastatingly jealous and paranoid the next - but he's standing front and centre before a tornado of talent in the shape of Lynch, and he can't help but come up short. Strong yet vulnerable and damaged women with an earthy, bold sensuality and fierce passions have often been her stock in trade, but she truly finds a rewarding outlet in the character of Joyce's true love and muse, Nora Barnacle. It's a superlative, vibrant performance from one of my favourite actresses.
