  No matter how you frame it, the topic of AIDS is heart wrenching. Still I couldn’t per say  
  pay attention to the drama in this a whole lot, due to Hugh Grants bizarre American accent. It was as if he wanted to speak in his natural voice, but would quickly shift to a quasi-mid western drawl. Why didn’t they just let him sound normal, his mom is British! I wouldn’t say it was very pleasant to hear, but I was intrigued none the less. I suppose it would be hilariously tragic if he had to do the pseudo mid-Atlantic thing, which is how I talk. (You bet your socks it sounds ridiculously embarrassing, but most New Englanders talk funny.) So yes I did just make my whole review about a fake accent.

  I'm a simple man, I see young Hugh Grant playing gay and I click play. That wonderful swooshy hair should've been preserved in a museum for all eternity. Thankfully it's preserved on film at least.

  You can definitely feel the TV film energy exuding from this but it was surprisingly touching. Any AIDS-era media just makes me feel so sad. I also quite enjoyed the road trip film that this unexpectedly turned into with our two homophobic mother queens.

  I have to shower Julie Andrews in praise for her powerhouse performance here. She manages to feel like a real person with authentic inner conflicts whereas the other characters sometimes feel a little stereotyped and one-note.

  Julie Andrews is British homophobic, ie covert, while Ann-Margret is an all-American overt homophobe. Watching these women play off one another was a treat. Especially Ann-Margret, who seemed to be having a blast playing the Southern trailer park beauty stereotype. Real proto-Taryn Manning vibes, in the best possible way!

  Hugh Grant's accent didn't bother me, I figured his character spent a lot of his life both in England and America 🤷🏼‍♀️

  genuinely crying atm. despite a low budget, movie was well paced and acted, and effectively made me relate to the strain of hugh grant's character and his mother willful ignorance. sobbgingh thanks
