  Owd Bob is exactly what you think, a sweet movie about an orphan boy from America, a lonely, bitter old grandfather, a couple of dogs who don't like each other (and with good reason), a sick mother and a friendship between a boy and a girl, who help each other through a dark period of their life.

  It's probably a tv movie, but that doesn't make the story any less interesting and true and it certainly doesn't mean that you get bad actors. James Cromwell plays the bitter, old grandpa, and he does a lot with a little, but the star for me, was the boy who played David. He avoids all the traps of playing a recently orphaned boy…

  A family friendly British entertainment about an orphaned boy coming to stay with his scowling grandfather, a sheep farmer on the Isle of Man. 
  We don’t ger Lassie but we do get Bob, the sheepdog. Sheepdogs and the annual contest that determines the best sheepdog of the territory is what matters to all, all the time. Add to this a rogue dog has been killing sheep and everyone blames the other dogs. Tensions rise. 
  Our boy is a teen who, between bouts finding relationship with his grandfather, is finding the difficulties and delights of love with a local farm girl. She happens to be the grandfather’s number one adversary’s daughter. Of course.

  This was on a dvd set I took out from the library. Had I known this was some sort of British Old Yeller I certainly would NOT have watched it. The scenery was beautiful and I liked the story until I did NOT like the story. I also feel sorry for poor James Cromwell who, for awhile there, kept ending up costarring with flocks of sheep.

  An overqualified Colm Meaney and James Cromwell star in this excellent commercial for The Isle of Man paid for by The Isle of Man Film Commission and Tourism Board. 

  My parents put this on and they loved it. In their defense, there is something quite moving about James Cromwell playing an Irish shepherd. I just liked that role better in Babe.

  Is what it is. Nothing more nothing less. If you like dogs you’ll be moved. The countryside is always beautiful on the Isle of Man but this is old school animal friendly family fare
