Came here expecting another cursed, killer cellphone from Japan “ripping off” from Miike’s One Missed Call, just to realize:
a) this came out a year before.
b) It was South Korean
c) Technically wasn’t… but it was the same. Some subtle callbacks to Ringu though.
Basically we follow the story of a woman who gets caught in this whole ordeal when she gets a cellphone that had prior owners dying from very strange, supernatural ways, all of them of course ultimately connected to some person who’s seeking vengeance.

Watched during my Summer of J-Horror II.
I was hoping for a straight up spooky cell phone story, but this movie really felt like 3 or 4 different films mashed together. Something probably could've been cut out to tighten it up. Like the whole stalker thing is the catalyst at the start, but it's got nothing to do with all the ghost stuff, and it comes and goes pretty abruptly. Sad to say, but at one point I thought the film was reaching a conclusion, and my heart sank when I realized there was still nearly half an hour left.
The little girl really goes for it with her highly expressive performance, it's a mix of creepy and campy, but I appreciate that. There are a few other alright moments, but not much else stood out to me in the end.
So there is a DoorDash driver that registered my husband’s phone number as his number so he can pick up the food and never deliver it. Anyway, I started trolling people so he can get the number banned because DoorDash won’t change it after us begging them for like a year.

Decent visual frights even if it reminds you too much of The Ring.
Most of the attempted scares are telegraphed even if the majority of them are relatively effective.
Other than the supernatural and murder-y stuff these phones are actually pretty durable and have excellent range.
Since these phones are always fully charged it's almost worth the trade off.

It was a good few years ago that the Asian horror scene became overloaded with Ringu clones that traded in pretty much the same ideas but with just enough of a spin to make it look as though they weren't complete copies. Phone was one of the more interesting ones.
In terms of plot, it's pretty much as expected although this one also throws a pretty healthy dose of possession in there as well, not to mention some quite interesting familial themes that at least give it an extra spin, too. It all builds up to a fairly excellent finale with some startling imagery and a good last shot.

Back in the spooky flip phone days of the early 2000s, comes a jump scare movie so generic, you'll wonder why the heck you've been seeing it slapped on a bunch of Top Asian horror lists.
As our protagonist looks after her friend's daughter, she receives spooky phone calls. All accompanied by a shit ton of non-scary jump scares that are scattered throughout to provide the lack-of-tension horror element. The child actor wasn't the best choice, as her scary-faced blue steel turned magnum look was laughable and she never came across as scary at any point. There is a solid story element that may have played out better had this been more of a thriller rather than a horror.
Unfortunately, this one isn't able to jump the hurdle of its early 2000s scary era roots. Probably only watch it if you're interested in any of the actors (who aren't that interesting in this one, sorry).

As I was watching Phone, I quickly formed the opinion that it was yet another nicely directed and acted but ultimately disposable K-horror movie. However, once the main twist was revealed, I began to be quite taken with it. It’s a film that I’ll probably revisit at some point, particularly since I’ll be armed with the sort of foreknowledge that isn’t available to the unspoiled first-time viewer. There are clues as to what is going on, which are seeded throughout but they’re very much on the oblique side. Some of them irked me at the time because they seemed to consist of rather empty ‘scare moments’ but having finished the film, they feel more integral.
