J’ai apprécié que toutes ces anecdotes de mortalité soient entrecoupées par des p’tits cartoons sympathiques. Ça m’a permis de dédramatiser un peu le sujet et de ne pas me laisser envahir par les émotions quand la dame raconte qu’un de ses chats s’est fait enlever par un hibou 😱
Is it funny because it's tragic or tragic because it's funny? I'm not sure, but the short length and concentration of variations on a theme over and over, as well as the cheerful narration provided by Tom and Debbie Nicholson, feels like it hits close to something profound in the way people approach life and connect to the creatures around them, for good and ill.
old couple so wholesome it made me forget i don't like old people
every time they talk about a different pet their faces light up with so much love and joy. it's so genuine. this is the most wholesome thing i've ever seen.
i mean, the husband made a skateboard for a possum so it could get around. the amount of LOVE these two have in their hearts. i'm crying.

The filmmaking here is fine but this is almost indistinguishable from the type of vanity mini-documentaries I've loathed making as freelance work over the past few years. There's a utility to producing content like this for a family to share but I fail to see how it intrigues anyone that doesn't already know the couple this film focuses on. Criterion Channel sells Pickle as the story of a fish that can't swim, but the hook is more "We're so white and rich that we have the luxury to pretend we're farmers in our porcelain mansion!" and it's a truly revolting display of wealth.

The strangest aspects of this 15-minute short were the many bizarre and horrifying ways that each of the animals died. Not to be overly morbid, but when one animal is killed by another animal, it is tragic. When it happens time and time again in various brutal ways, it makes you start to wonder what is going on.
A married couple who collect an odd assortment of animals, nurse them back to health (such as a paraplegic possum and a fish that can’t swim) only to have each one die tragically and brutally? They have a smile on their faces as they tell each bizarre story. Some may see this as a shorter and younger cousin to Gates of Heaven. It might actually be closer to Tiger King if we only knew more of what went on behind the scenes.
