Unique and beautiful. There's no other word that could describe this movie other than "perfection". This film will leave you with so many questions and wonders in your mind.
If we're talking about biopic films of artists and painters, most previous films have set an ideology that in every film the artist has to be crazy about their work, have emotional conflict, unsound mind, have some inferiority. This is possibly the most modest biopic I've seen, a brief 85 minutes whose prevailing tone is melancholy drollery rather than admiration for an upward trajectory. Pirosmani (Avtandil Varazi) is a nomadic talent with no head for business; he briefly runs a grocery store with a friend but can't maintain. There's a startling cut when he's standing in the doorway yelling at his business partner to get out to Pirosmani standing behind the counter alone: shot-reverse shot is occupied by the same subject jumping through time. A masterpiece by all means, Pirosmani touched me beautifully. It broke me at places, made me fill up with a unique combination of happiness and sadness that comes from seeing a man fulfilling his artistic purpose against all the forces that can be hurled at him. An artist’s journey through life, carrying himself from disappointment to disappointment, as his desire to simply paint is not sustained by any kind of economic skill. Finding one’s individuality as an artist is so complex and sometimes people are the ones that stand in the way of achieving it, either willingly or not. This film is so utterly beautiful in all its austereness. A sisyphic walk on damp moors bathed in shadow and fog, on which one can keep walking as they collect mud and little rocks and try to get rid of them. People really don’t appreciate artists at all. Think about it. How many artists in the world have suffered while they were alive? How many artists have we wasted and lost? People only value and love them after they die. Artists are the most real people of all, those who do not appreciate artists are true shit hypocrites. Pirosmani really touched me. He was a real commie. He fed the poor until he broke and he realized class inequality, he hated the bourgeoisie and love children. He was very open-minded to his era.
I believe he has rested so peacefully now. This world is just an unfair yet manipulative place where the truest and the kindest people only feel guilt and disappointment in life. Pirosmani doesn’t belong to this world, he belongs to heaven.
I adored the style of this film. The colour palette was beautiful.
Pretty mundane as far as biopics go, and I mean that positively. I love how this doesn’t put its subject on a pedestal or tear him down, it just portrays him as the majority of artists actually are… a cool, normal broke ass dude who loves to paint. The pacing is a bit off at points but the absolutely gorgeous colors and scenery throughout (which perfectly mimics Niko Pirosmani‘s paintings) really kept me engaged. Also his art was pretty damn cool.
Sad but beautiful with painterly compositions. Wonderful piece of work.
