Aisultan’s cinematography never disappoints, everything in this film was immersive and stunning; the costuming, the soundtracks and the characters were 10/10.
Overall its an incredible portrayal of the Goloshchyokin famine in the 1930s. Even though it was shot and treated as an ethno-horror supernatural film, it makes great visual commentary on the tragedies of Russian imperialism and man-made hunger during the industrialization era of the USSR. This is probably one of the best movies that covered the subject of Asharshylyk and famine-induced cannibalism in Kazakhstan at the moment. The horror elements in this movie are pants shitting terrifying too, all without the use of cheap jumpscares and blood or gore.

Переход от малых форм к большим — серьезный шаг. Особенно, если совсем недавно ты снимал клипы для Джа Халиба и Вани Дорна, а сегодня — выпускаешь драму про голод в Казахстане 30-х годов. Айсултан Сеитов, как и Ладо Кватания, вырос из клипмейкерских штанишек и надел на себя костюм настоящего режиссера полного метра. Но если «Казнь» — пусть и авторское, но сугубо жанровое кино, то «КАШ» для Сеитова — высказывание. Важное в культурном плане и спорное в реализации.
Айс явно хорошо знаком с фильмографией А24 — оставаясь погруженной в исторический контекст притчей, «КАШ» большую часть времени проводит на территории фолк-хоррора: густого, тревожного, вытаскивающего наружу всех демонов, которых не спрятать в этой голой степи. Только вот постепенно форма на экране начинает поглощать…
a beautiful and haunting picture lacking only a good script. the second part of the movie felt like eternity and didn't make any progress for the end only to be abrupt and heart wrenching. still it's a great debut for the director.

Actually liked it very much. This film skillfully uses a24 horror movie formula and stays between «arthouse» and commercial cinema. This is what was lacking in kazakhstan cinema right now. It's not ideal but at least it's something new and not a pretentious boring AdilkhanErzhanovEmirBaigazin ass of a movie.
I also kinda adored both of them (meaning Erzhanov and Baigazin) earlier but they are stuck in their repeating circle of boring single shot bad played films that will go to the kannes and will be completely unnoticed in kazakhstan.
The only bad things about QASH is the ending, which is totally dissatisfying.

I really enjoyed the cinematography, sound design, world design, attention to details, acting, homage to Kazakh culture, history, folklore, traditions — everything related to the core of Kazakh nation.
You can clearly see that this movie was created by a music video director. I saw a lot of tricks he used in his previous works, especially with Maslo Chernogo Tmina. All in all, the cinematography was amazing — it was a really interesting and unique addition (or i should say rather an instrument) to the storytelling.

как будто постоянное клиповое построение кадра мешает темпу именно кинематографическому. тот же уэс андерсон не сразу перешел к жанру «каждый кадр разбираем на скрины», а сначала научился истории рассказывать. очень красивая картинка, за которой слишком много пустот.
