When an honorable governor retires from his post after a heart attack, he is replaced by a corrupt individual.
An incredibly misogynistic film that thinks it is caring for the female characters but in actuality has a dim view of the possibilities for a woman’s life. Somehow inflamed my hatred toward men more than I thought was possible at the start.
Not to be too reductive but perhaps men shouldn’t hold any form of power.
Ahmed Jamal’s drama is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure. In the old walled city of Lahore, a woman must choose between saving her honour and her brother’s life. In Urdu with English subtitles.
When an admirable governor (Sajid Hasan) steps down from his position following a heart attack, he is substituted by an immoral individual (Sunil Shankar).
Sajid Hasan gives a good performance in his part as the governor who has to retire because of health worries, while Sunil Shankar is fine as the individual who is up to no good.
Elsewhere, there is a decent performance to be had from Sanam Saeed in her part as Samina, the woman who has a big decision to…
Some interesting ideas in here and potential which were not explored fully enough. I think if that it had followed the play less faithfully it could have been improved.
I've been trying to find this adaptation for Measure for Measure for some time now, and I finally got my hands on it. It's taken a few pretty interesting cultural liberties, but not so many that it's completely unrecognizable from the source material. The "feel" of the film is still very Shakespeearean, and the twists and turns of the original play make it a compelling watch. Sanam Saeed is easily the best part of this (as she is with most projects) playing the pious sister of a wrongfully convicted man whose willing to do anything to see him free. The ending is strange in context, and I wish they had changed it, but nonetheless a compelling watch.
Directed by Ahmed Jamal this film based on “Measure for Measure” stars Sanam Saeed, Rohail Peerzada and Sajid Hasan. The governor of Lahore pretends to go on holiday and leaves a strict disciplinarian in charge.
Measure for Measure is not a Shakespeare play I am familiar with but I know enough of this playwrights work to quickly twig where this adaptation was going. Sticking fairly well to the source material this film does a good job of moving the plot to modern day Pakistan. Maybe not ground breaking but a decent adaptation none the less.
