So many scenes of high-ranking soldiers hovered intently over gigantic maps, which, like yakuza in tracksuits slouching around the bosses office, is something that I will simply never tire off.
This felt a bit like a bridge between HBO's Conspiracy, and the masterpiece that is Downfall, not nearly as good as either but there is something endlessly fascinating about getting a look at these desperate men, in their poorly-lit bunkers while outside the dark dream is crumbling all around them.
Not a lot of actual action in this one, but the discussions surrounding the bear-trap these die-hards have found themselves in and how exactly they got there are just as frightening and savage as any big, noisy set-piece battle scene.
Dry retelling of the last seven months in the life of WW2 German general Erwin Rommel.
Despite the care and attention to detail taken here it reduces the flamboyant man to a dour, pouting mediocrity.
Covers some of the same territory as Valkyrie but with more authenticity and less flair.
One scene features an attack by British fighters on Rommels car, the fighter was flown by a relative of my ex wife.
Fuck the Nazis, they suck. Rommels descendants got all mad that this film made him look weak, tough shit.
Film #340 of 2022.
A simple, decent film about one of the most notorious WW2 Nazi officers.
Need I say more?
Paging James Mason! Paging James Mason!
You know, the Desert Fox wasn't a perfect movie. But at least James Mason looked like he was having a good time. He got how Rommel could light up a room, throwing together a battle plan in the desert like a master chef cooking up a snack for his best friends. He got how Rommel could be in the hospital sick and in trouble with Hitler, and still look forward to having coffee with his wife. He got how Rommel could look a couple of real scumbags in the eye, accept his own pointless murder, and still walk off looking and feeling like a patriot.
None of that happens in this movie. Rommel looks…
A little bit better than those National Geographic documentaries.
Really good story. Laughable CGI that seemed out of place. Reminder me of Conspiracy and Downfall.
This bio of Germany's magnificent Desert Fox does him little justice. By all accounts, General Rommel was a charismatic, commanding and dynamic presence. A hero of the Reich, admired and feared, by equally formidable adversaries. ("Rommel you magnificent bastard! I read your book!" --- Patton) But for the uniform, you might think from this portrayal that a pleasant but slightly befuddled insurance rep somehow stumbled into the wrong show, an amiable but dim dullard who skips D-Day for a birthday party. Cursory treatment of the most compelling part of his story.....his turn against Hitler, his complicity in the assasination attempt and, finally, the heartbreaking decision to take the life that deserves so much more in the telling than this mediocre work delivers.
Fascinating story of the plot to kill Hitler and end the war.
The actor who played Rommel was excellent as was the actor who played his Chief of Staff. Excellent ensemble cast that really showed the nuances, politics, rivalries and boot licking that was an inherent part of participation in the Nazi war machine.
This film picks up his career just prior to the Allied invasion of France, with Hitler putting Rommel in charge of the so called, 'Atlantic Wall', which in reality was more like a rusty screen door half hanging off it's hinges. A nice balance is struck between military planning, competition between personalities, and political intrigue, centered around the 20th of July bomb plot. And there is even a little Allied Commando and espionage activity. Oddly enough, the actors of the supporting cast outshine the lead role. Rommel isn't even made to look all that a compelling personality. High production values. Recommended.
