Slacker Stephen Dorff becomes a Cobainian messiah for Gen-X nihilism after surviving a hostage situation with Reese Witherspoon. Despite his instant zap into fame, he still wanders through his dude life whilst being haunted by the trauma of this event. Finding himself on t-shirts, TV, banners, quoted beyond meaning, and so on. Reese is far away, only to be seen through static TV interviews, and this divide between them makes their unlikely bond ever stronger. Perfectly beer sippin’ laid back with a grey cloud rolling above, punctuated by sincere heartfelt moments and poignant messages, makes it disappointingly unseen or appreciated. Possibly the most nineties movie about the nineties, yet still ever relatable and true twenty years later.

I picked this up for $1 the other day and I loved every mid-1990s minute of it. I have no idea how I have never seen this before. When I think of movies that are drenched in the 1990s nostalgia Singles, Wayne's World and perhaps even Reality Bites will rush to my thoughts and if I was pushing it I would throw Tank Girl and Mallrats in the mix. I’m honestly surprised this was so poorly received upon release when it was both a scathing indictment of the sensationalist news cycle of the 90s right around the time Judge Lance Ito became a household name, and the absolute epitome of the grungy, nihilistic Gen-X culture captured forever on film. Has the exact amount of Reese Witherspoon I can tolerate (right before her head went full-apple shaped), and even a Gary Coleman cameo!
And if you don’t believe what a 90s time capsule this is, the soundtrack features Soundgarden, L7, Radiohead (mostly in the hammiest ways imaginable, adding further to the 90s charm) and even an appearance from FUCKING GWAR!

After being held hostage for 36 days in a convenience store, Cliff Spab (a fantastic Stephen Dorff) emerges to find that he has instantly achieved an unwanted celebrity status after the entire ordeal was broadcast nationwide on television. While the FBI seems to think Spab was in on the situation, Spab only wants to escape the limelight and perhaps make his way back, a la Odysseus, to his Penelope, Wendy (Reese Witherspoon), one of the other unfortunate hostages.
