Despite the distressing amount of Confederate flags on display, Shag ends up a charming spin on the best buds having a wild weekend before a wedding formula. The broad comedic types are still here: the uptight nerd, the square engaged one with a fun side waiting to break out, the party animal, the “ugly” duck who becomes a swan. But this time they’re all played by women. Come for Phoebe Cates and Bridget Fonda as ‘60s teens with Suthawn accents, stay for the fun and earnest direction from Zelda Barron. And the wall to wall period soundtrack slaps. If you’re looking for a light ‘80s romcom from a female perspective, put on your Shag shoes!
Annabeth Gish and Scott Coffey are the heart of this movie and adorable to the max in it.
Sweet, fluffy story about 1960s lady friends out for a sneaky beach vacation before one of them gets married and the others go off to college. It's got a fun soundtrack, great fashions, a dance contest (!), and a comfortably nostalgic lens. It sort of has something to say about women's roles in this time, when liberation meant going to college but marriage was still the ultimate goal. It's always nice to see Phoebe Cates. And there's a super-cute love story between Annabeth Gish and Scott Coffey.

Ein für mich noch nicht abgenutztes hot Summer of 63-Setting. 4 Freundinnen auf einer vorgetäuschte Bildungsreise übers Wochenende zum Spring-Break der 60er. Überall wird sich gesonnt, gefeiert, getwistet, geschwoft, geflirtet und geknuscht.
Und bis der reizende 'late 80er'-Cast all seine speziellen Problemchen - wie etwa eskalierende Houseparty, Schönheitswettbewerb, neue Liebe, erste Liebe, große Liebe und ein Shag-Tanzwettbewerb als entscheidungsbringendes Finale - gelöst hat, kann man zur sommerlichen Atmo und den Songs beschwingt mitwippen.
Eine relativ kitschfreie, moralisch mustergültige und unbeschwert-swingende Jugendromanze.

This was a lot of fun! In the most reductive way possible I’d pitch it as American Graffiti crossed with Spring Breakers

When I found this tape I had never even heard of Shag which surprised me! It's from the '80s, set in the '60s with Bridget Fonda and Phoebe Cates but this ain't Dirty Dancing and I didn't give a flying fuck about any of the characters with terrible South Carolina accents except for "Pudge" the "fat girl" who is actually "very thin" (Annabeth Gish) and her sweet summer fling "Buzz" (Scott Coffey).
Four gal pals have one last weekend together before they get married (never to be seen again, I suppose) or go off to college, so they head to Myrtle Beach, and almost immediately separate and do their own thing. Phoebe Cates (the one who is engaged) ends up being romanced/harassed by an intolerable shithead, and it is purely frustrating to watch. Bridget Fonda is inadvertently saved from a rape by two girls who just want to abuse and humiliate her for their own purposes. Page Hannah tries to keep things under control, and everything with her character is quite good, it’s a shame she didn’t work more. One of her only other credits is a movie called After School, which…
