roseanne: "i have a plan"
*cuts to a shot of the twin towers*
i think this might be one of my favourite meryl streep performances, they told her she couldn't do comedy and she snapped
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
While I am anti
- blaming the other woman for the affair
I am very pro
- cooking the hamster
- mixing up old people's pills
- dramatically rolling off pool floaties
- First Wives Clubbing Ed Begley Jr
watching meryl streep roll around on her giant round pink bed in her pink satin pajamas is the antidote for pandemic depression.
meryl streep dressed head to toe in pink in a pink palace with a pink velour headboard to match her pink bedding, she is the moment
Consistently at-low-simmer funny, which is surprising given how broadly it's written. Roseanne never really convinces as a foil for Streep but that makes sense given that this is sort of a proto-DEATH BECOMES HER satire that instead of relishing pitting women against each other ultimately settles on the relatively progressive for its time idea that if they ever stopped caring about what men thought about them they'd control everything.
Nearly every outfit that Meryl Streep wears in this is divine. She's doused in these really light pastel pinks that are always accentuated by flowers as accessories and these really light scarves that seem to blow in the wind, as if she really is the heroine of a romance novel. I love it and I wish I had her entire closet. Also, her hair? Oh my god. Almost makes me appreciate being a blonde.
Pretty fatphobic and misogynistic but also delightfully camp like a beautiful FIRST WIVES CLUB mixed with John Waters, I’m into it
Meryl in the late 80’s could have stolen anyone’s man. This is how I would like to imagine all romance novelists. Beautiful, seductive, and always up for some research. Good on Roseanne for also going full First Wives Club before that movie was even made.
I want to unequivocally love this, but it suffers from a flaw of so many allegedly feminist films: it embraces a bourgeois vision of feminism.
Ascension up the capitalist ladder will not lead to women's liberation, and any film that posits that as a positive path to the emancipation of any woman is presenting a myth that only serves to tighten the chains. Adding to that a woman wielding her strength to abuse other women just to avenge herself on a man and you have nothing but an assimilative argument that defeats itself. Which is very disappointing after a strong start showing a much more proletarian and actually feminist approach - solidarity amongst women and workers and other victims of…
yes i watch for the plot
the plot: meryl streep looking pretty
Another near perfect late 80s comedy. I can’t watch Death Becomes Her and then not watch this, they go hand in hand, in my opinion. I LOVE this movie, the humour, the campy vibe, Meryl is utterly fabulous. Laugh out loud funny. A great movie to finish a night of movies on.
