  Teenaged loneliness and despair, unforgettably rendered as a musically structured triptych (“A little sonata, usually pretty easy”). Chantal and Louisette’s life in their suburban Montréal wasteland, surrounded by adults lost in their own professional pursuits and petty resentments, is largely spent waiting for anyone who might simply give them the small gift of acknowledging they exist. Private games they play with their nearly constantly worn headphones find them surreptitiously recording the world around them, obsessively playing back the all too rare snatches that suggest any of it is actually worth it (“This is a song which perfumes the daily shackles of our lives”). If the film’s ultimately so mercilessly devastating in its vision, that’s only because the first two chapters…

  En le revoyant vendredi dernier lors d'une projection à la casa obscura en présence de Micheline Lanctôt, je me suis dit une couple de fois que c'était un Sofia Coppola avant Sofia. Ou, en tout cas, que Coppola avait sûrement vu Sonatine avant de réaliser Virgin Suicides. Il y avait plusieurs parallèles à faire dans leurs imageries de l'ennui chez les adolescentes, mais avec Pascale Bussières au lieu de Kirsten Dunst! J'aime beaucoup plus le Sonatine de Lanctôt ceci dit. La structure en trois blocs est casse-gueule. De tourner un long-métrage complet dans des transports en commun c'est casse-gueule. D'avoir une scène de 20 minutes en Bulgare sans sous-titre c'est casse-gueule. De montrer sans sentimentalisme deux adolescentes qui décident de mourir c'est vraiment casse-gueule... Mais tout marche et Micheline réussi là ou n'importe qui se serait cassé la gueule.

  Je le considère comme un des importants chef d’œuvres de notre cinématographie.

  Two young women search the city streets looking for someone to care for them, and when nothing comes to fruition, they take the biggest gamble

  Stripped of a conventional film structure, Director Micheline Lanctôt seeds every moment with longing, the protagonists defined only by snatches of movement, their lives sketched briefly, and their wants made clear. The most difficult part, and the most emotional, is the sad inevitability that dawns on the viewer as the film reaches its famous climax, the search for being wanted is muddled by the complexities of the world, and the realization that no one will instinctively care because you are you.

  Je suis tellement contente d’avoir pu voir ce film, quelle petite pépite. C’est assurément un de mes films québécois préférés.

  En regardant les deux premières parties je me demandais où tout cela allait nous mener, et bien j’ai été très surprise. Les films où on met de l’avant une quelconque « relation » entre une jeune fille et un homme beaucoup plus âgé me met toujours mal à l’aise…par contre ici, j’ai trouvé que cela a été fait avec une intention et un message donc ça passe mieux. La troisième partie est de loin la meilleure selon moi, mais les deux premières sont tout aussi importantes. Sans elles on comprendrait moins bien pourquoi à la fin les deux jeunes filles en viennent à prendre une telle décision.

  Probably better than I'm giving it credit for, although it's also the type of film that I was probably always fated to find a bit too slight and undramatic for my taste even if I hadn't found myself having to constantly re-sync the subtitles, which didn't help things at all.

  This is definitely more of what I think of as a jrhovind movie than a J Winston movie, and I think at least some of you who follow both of us on here will know exactly what I mean by that description (see also Nils Malmros' Tree of Knowledge)...
